RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge Intrepid) - qualified fifth, fastest Dodge.
NOTE: Newman has won two poles this season and has qualified in the top five in eight of the past nine races. He broke up a potential top-five Chevrolet sweep in time trials.
"Those Chevys are pretty good everywhere, so that's not a big surprise. We ran faster than we did in practice, and a lot of people didn't do that. I'm pretty happy with that lap. It was a good run for the ALLTEL Dodge. That's about what we figured we'd run based on practice. We'll see what it's like in race trim now."
KENNY WALLACE (No. 23 Stacker2 Dodge Intrepid) - qualified 14th
"I wish we could have run a little faster, but we were a little loose getting into turn three on both laps. Turn three was my problem spot. I ran what I ran in practice, so I guess you can't complain too much about that. We'll see how it holds up."
CASEY MEARS (No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid) - fastest rookie, qualified 11th
"I've got to thank everybody on the Target Dodge crew. We unloaded out of the box pretty fast, and a lot of that was because Sterling came here and tested. We copied his setup and ran real good right out of the box. It's a decent qualifying effort for us. We slowed down just a little bit, but it looks like a lot of other guys did, too. We're not running as good as we'd like, but realistically we're running like we probably should given my experience. This is probably one of the best cars I've had so far, and I hope it transfers over to the race.
"It felt pretty good. The track was a little slicker than it was in practice. I think we were about a tenth slower than we were in practice, and that was disappointing, but come to find out a bunch of guys slowed down. I'm really happy for the team. They've worked hard all year long, and I've got the biggest learning curve I've ever had in front of me. They've been sticking behind me and giving me everything they have to go fast. A special thanks to Sterling. He came up here and tested and we just copied his setup.
"When I first came here in a Busch car, I overdrove the corners getting in. I learned a lot from that, and hopefully I'll keep learning. I've got a lot to go yet."
RUSTY WALLACE (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Intrepid) - qualified 17th
"We slowed down just a little bit. I don't know why. We were loose in the corners and that hurt me, but we'll be good in the race. We just needed a little more speed for qualifying."
BILL ELLIOTT (No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Intrepid) - qualified 28th
"We haven't been that good since we've been here. We've got to get better."
WARD BURTON (No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid) - qualified 20th
"We weren't as good as we were in practice. The 1 car had me blocked in when I was trying to get back in the garage. They pushed forward and I went back a little bit. It's no big deal. It banged the right rear a little, but we'll fix it quick. We'll know more after Happy Hour tonight, but we're planning on having a great race tomorrow."
KYLE PETTY (No. 45 Georgia Pacific Dodge Intrepid) - qualified eighth
"The car is pretty good, but I'm still pretty sore. I thought I was over it last week. California isn't that bad on you. Richmond is a little bit tougher on you. I feel better this week than I've felt since Bristol, but I'm still a little sorer than I anticipated. It was a good lap. These guys have worked really hard, and we've been down a little bit. Maybe this will give them a little boost. This is where I got my first win, and I think this is the only track on the circuit where I've won and my father and grandfather have won, too. This is a good place for us."
JIMMY SPENCER (No. 7 Sirius Satellite Radio Dodge Intrepid) - qualified 25th
"We've been fighting it all day long, and hopefully we'll get it fixed in Happy Hour. If we don't, we're going to be in big trouble. You don't want the car to be loose getting in here."
STERLING MARLIN (No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid) - qualified 21st
"I thought we could back up practice, but we got loose in qualifying. I think we'll race good, but we never qualify good here. We'll get the Coors Light Dodge ready to race. The track changed a lot before qualifying. We were junk when we first got here The last 15 minutes of practice we made a lot of changes and it paid off."
