The official announcement came on SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Thursday night. On the show, Smith revealed to host Dave Moody that he got the call from TBR to drive the No. 7 Chevrolet SS on Tuesday of this week.

Baldwin announced a split with 2015 driver Alex Bowman earlier today, whom Smith is replacing.

"This has been a crazy few days, but I'm really excited that we were able to put this together," he said. "I have a ton of respect for Tommy and what he's built there. It's going to be a lot of fun.

"Our son Rhett turns one next month, so I'll be putting in my request for some Road Rippers cars. That's a pretty good perk too!"

Smith's resume

The majority of Smith’s Sprint Cup career was spent with Denver-based Furniture Row Racing from 2009 until 2012 when he was replaced by Kurt Busch. Smith earned Furniture Row’s first Cup win in the No. 78 Chevy at Darlington Raceway in 2011.

For the last three seasons, Smith, 32, piloted the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevy. He finished top-four in the Xfinity Series standings, running a career-high second in 2014. During Smith’s tenure with the Dale Earnhardt Jr.-owned team, the driver earned six wins — including his first start with JRM at Homestead Speedway in 2012 — 27 top fives and 92 top-10 finishes.

Smith also dabbled in the Camping World Truck Series earning a top-five at Gateway in 2007.

TBR's history

Baldwin’s Sprint Cup operation debuted in 2009. The former crew chief expanded his operation to full-time in 2011 with Dave Blaney. Alex Bowman drove the No. 7 Chevy last year and finished 33rd in the standings.

This is a really great time for us," said team owner Tommy Baldwin in a release. "Having a driver with Regan's credentials further elevates our program. He's a seasoned driver and a proven race winner. We're really looking forward to 2016."
