Instead of preparing for their qualifying runs, teams were simply preparing for practice. Earlier in the day the first session began at 3 PM, but was cut short after only 40 minutes and NASCAR quickly forced the evacuation of the metal grandstands knowing storms were in the area.

Track drying efforts began at roughly 6 PM est. Qualifying for Saturday night's Pepsi 400 under the lights was rescheduled for 10 AM Friday morning. NASCAR decided to realign the schedule so the teams would get more practice time for one of the season's biggest events.

The soggy day at the Daytona International Speedway also turned scary when eight people were treated after lightning struck a vendor display set up outside of the speedway. Luckily, everyone was released with no serious injuries.
