"This was a very unfortunate situation," said NASCAR President Mike Helton. "Emotions are a part of every sport, NASCAR Winston Cup racing included. However, there is a fine line. In this instance, that line was crossed."

Both racers were in violation of Section 12-4-A of the NASCAR rulebook: Actions detrimental to stock car racing - altercation with another competitor in the garage area after the event. Spencer was also hit with a violation of section 12-4-F: Fighting.
