CHASSIS NOTES; WINSTON CUP; MICHIGAN
[The following are facts and figures regarding the cars Pontiac teams will be running during this weekend's NASCAR Winston Cup Series event at Michigan.]
Grand Rapids native Johnny Benson returns home this weekend with the same chassis he drove to a 24th place finish at Pocono Raceway in June. Benson, who is currently 10th in the Winston Cup point standings, has two top five finishes (Pocono, Indy) in his last three starts.
No. 14 Rookie Ron Hornaday will look to make his second career start at Michigan this weekend with the same chassis he drove to a 34th place finish in the Brickyard 400 two weeks ago. For the season, Hornaday has one top 10 and three top 20 finishes.
Interstate Batteries Pontiac driver Bobby Labonte grabbed his 11th top 10 finish of the 2001 season last week at Watkins Glen and moved to within 93 points of fourth place in the Winston Cup point standings. Labonte, who has completed every lap in this event over the course of his career, is a two-time pole winner and three-time race winner at Michigan.
Home Depot Grand Prix driver Tony Stewart comes to Michigan ranked fifth in the NASCAR Winston Cup standings, just four points behind fourth place Sterling Marlin. Stewart, who won at Michigan last season, is behind the wheel of the chassis that crashed late in the going at Chicagoland Speedway
Rick Mast, who owns one career top five finish at Michigan International Speedway, is looking to make his third start of the season in the Duke's Mayonnaise Grand Prix. Mast is running the same chassis that made a qualifying attempt at Indianapolis two weeks ago, but failed to qualify.
M&M's Pontiac driver Ken Schrader wheeled this car to a 14th place finish here in June, which stands as its last appearance on track. Schrader - a two-time Michigan pole winner - has earned five career top fives in his 34 Michigan starts.
