NASCAR Fans E-mail List
For years we've heard drivers say that you've just gotta make laps and you'll be a contender in the championship. Well, lets look at the season thus far and see if the stats bear that out. Lets create a driver called Lead Lap. Now, this driver is very consistent, just not exciting at all. All he does is finish on the lead lap every race.....always the last car on the lead lap, and he never gets any bonus points. Making laps.....just like "they" say you've gotta do. Thru the first 13 races of the season (that includes todays event at (Pocono), this driver would have 1556 points....that would be good for 9th in the standings. His best finish would have been 4th at Richmond, his worst 27th at Sears Point, average finish 14.8. Remember, he can never win, he's just making points. Only 3 Top-10's.....only 1 Top-5....this guy isn't a contender, even if he is consistent. And that may point out the difference between the contenders & the pretenders.....you've gotta lead laps, & you've gotta run up front if you're gonna be one of the big dogs. Here's Mr. Lead Lap's stats thus far: Daytona......24 Rockingham...12 Richmond..... 4 Atlanta......12 Darlington...13 Texas........ 9 Bristol......15 Martinsville.16 Sears Point..27 Talladega....16 Charlotte....18 Dover........ 6 Pocono.......21 Avg. Fin.....14.8 Total Points 1556 - 9th, 30 points behind Ricky Rudd. We can keep track of Mr. Lap's status as the year progresses, but I don't look for him to improve much unless he gets some Yates horsepower,or a rules change from NASCAR to help "level the playing field".(G) HenryNASCAR Fans _______________________________________ NASCAR Fans Website http://www.nascarfans.com
