LONG POND, Pa. (July 23, 2000) -- Elliott Sadler and the Wood Brothers Racing Team contended with power steering problems, which resulted in a 29th place finish. Sadler started the race from the 36th position and raced to as high as 10th before being sidelined.
The hose connected to the power steering pump failed and Sadler's CITGO Ford was forced behind pit wall for repairs. The Wood Brothers crew repaired problem and Sadler returned to the race in the 37th position. By races end, Sadler and the No. 21 CITGO Ford had advanced to 29th.
Quoting Elliott: "I've never seen that happen before. The fitting broke off of the power steering pump. We were just sitting there riding along. We didn't have a good car today, but we were just gonna try to outlast the rest of them. We topped off and were only gonna have to stop one more time, so we might have gotten four or five positions that way, but it just wasn't meant to be today. The CITGO Ford wasn't where we wanted to have it, but we were gonna try to act smart with gas mileage until the power steering pump broke. We'll try to get them at Indy."
Elliott Sadler and the CITGO Ford next head to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Brickyard 400 will be televised live nationally by ABC. The start of Saturday's race is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, August 5, 2000.
