J.J. Yeley, driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), fought an ill-handling race car throughout Sunday's Pennsylvania 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway. The result was a 35th-place finish.

Yeley endured a loose race car from the start of the 200-lap race, and by lap 45 -- during one of several long green flag runs -- was already down a lap. After chassis adjustments on two separate stops, Yeley's car was still extremely loose, especially in the center of turn one. By lap 105, he found himself two laps down.

After repeated attempts by the Interstate Batteries crew to find a fix to what ailed the No. 18 machine, drastic air pressure changes, wedge adjustments, and the removal and insertion of spring rubbers to augment the shock package tightened the car up only slightly toward the end of the race. Still, it never came around to Yeley's liking.

"We started off the race really loose on entry and exit," Yeley said. "The guys tried to make major changes to tighten the car up and it finally got to a point where it was tight on throttle, but it was still free on entry. It was a long and frustrating day that we'll need to put behind us. We know we need to focus on a better finish (next week) at Watkins Glen."
