Race: NASCAR Nextel Cup Pennsylvania 500
Weather: Mostly sunny turning to partly cloudy
Winner: Kurt Busch, driver of the #2 Miller Lite Dodge from Penske Racing.
Top-five finishers: Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson.
Race recap: This Sunday belonged to Kurt Busch, who broke his 51-race win drought when he crossed the line a lengthy 4.131 seconds ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. As Busch tallied his 16th series career win, his front-running 175 laps in the 200-lap event broke the laps-led track record of 165 held by Jeff Gordon since 1998.
Meanwhile, Earnhardt Jr. had his own victory of sorts, overcoming an early race spin and a shock change under caution and challenging at the front with a change of just two right-side Goodyear Eagles at the lap 143 restart. Kurt Busch led to the finish from lap 174.
The race had seven cautions for 27 laps and 17 lead changes among 11 drivers.
Busch's victory also moved him into the 12th and final position eligible for the 10-race Chase to the Championship, bumping Earnhardt Jr. to 13th. Leading the points, with just five races remaining before the 10-race playoff begins, is Jeff Gordon, followed 366 points back by Denny Hamlin.
Goodyear comment from Rick Heinrich, sales account manager for Nextel Cup: "This was the second time that we have used this particular combination of Goodyear Eagle radials--both times this season at Pocono. This track is unique on the NASCAR circuit and this tire recommendation has worked very well this year. The track is very hard on tires because of hard braking and very high straightaway speeds. Our tires handled it all very well throughout the race."
Other NASCAR racing: The inaugural Busch Series Canadian race, held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal on Saturday, saw Kevin Harvick victorious over native son Patrick Carpentier in a race with confusing closing laps. Dueling between front-running drivers Marcos Ambrose and Robby Gordon ended with Ambrose spinning out and Gordon being black flagged and not allowed to race at the Nextel Cup event at Pocono the following day. Max Papis finished third, Canadian Ron Fellows was fourth, with Stephen Leicht in fifth. Ambrose ended up seventh.
