Pocono II: GM teams qualifying quotes

Tony Stewart -- ...

Tony Stewart -- #20 The Home Depot Chevrolet
6TH position

GOOD LAP OUT THERE Track has cooled down. Everyone is picking up speed right now. It's like I told the guys-we ran a good lap, we didn't run a smooth lap, but a pretty decent, quick lap.

RE: CHANGES TO TRACK SURFACE They need to do a lot of work. I give them a lot of credit-I don't think they were able to change it much, but to expect them to be able to do something major in a six week period is impossible anyway. I think the fact that they just made an effort is huge for them to be able to do it, but it's still pretty bumpy.

Brian Vickers -- #25 GMAC Chevrolet
8th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Yeah, I was happy with it. It was a good lap time. I just had the feeling that it wasn't going to be the pole, though. You know, Mark (Martin) really blew us away with that lap and congratulations to him. We'll see what happens-I think it will be a good starting spot.

YOU LIKE POCONO? Yeah, you know, I've always run well at this race track and we've just got have some luck on our side and we'll be in good shape.

Jimmie Johnson -- #48 Lowe's Chevrolet
9th position

Note: Running his backup car after an accident in practice on Friday.

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Really good. We made some huge changes to the car between the practice session and going into qualifying. If I could do it again I'd find some more speed, but I'm really, really happy with the car. The grip level is real high. Each corner that I made, I kept raising my speed through the corner and the car kept sticking. Very, very good lap. I'm very proud of it and I think we'll have a really good race car.

HOW DO YOU THINK THIS CAR WILL END UP IN QUALIFYING ORDER AND IN THE RACE? It's hard to tell since I don't have a lot of laps with the new setup in this car. But, the fact that it drove that well in qualifying trim, I'm going to be in real good shape.

Kevin Harvick -- #29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet
10th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? The car was really good, the GM Goodwrench Chevrolet. We didn't really make a mock qualifying run (in practice), had a couple of cautions come out. This was our first time. But, left a couple tenths out there-the car was really good. It was a good lap for us and I'm happy with it.

HOW DO YOU FEEL FOR TOMORROW? We feel really good. We felt really good in practice and in race runs, so we're excited.

Joe Nemechek -- #01 U.S. Army Chevrolet
14th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Oh, it was definitely exciting, I can put it that way. My car just seemed to get bad loose there, for whatever reason. We kind of fought some of that yesterday, it just seemed kind of worse today, I don't know what did it. Turn 1 wasn't bad, Turn 2-just the bump over there is incredible. If you don't hit it just right, it will break those back tires loose. Turn 3, it just seems like we've lost some grip there. Everybody's complaining about the same thing. You get loose there and then you can't drive onto the straightaway. Overall, it was a good lap.

Jeff Burton -- #31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet
17th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Not bad. We struggled pretty good yesterday. Made a lot of changes today and I think we made a big change on the car that seemed to help. A little bit too tight for qualifying, but that was what we were hoping for-we were way too loose yesterday in qualifying with the half lap we made. I think we made some gains there.

ANY CONCERNS ABOUT TIRES THIS WEEKEND AFTER WHAT HAPPENED HERE IN THE SPRING RACE? Well, we've got to watch our cambers and pay attention to all that stuff. We had a problem here last time. We didn't particularly have a problem, but several teams had a problem and we can't ignore that. We're trying to be respectful of our cambers and our air pressures and that's about all we can do right now.

Scott Riggs -- #10 Valvoline Chevrolet
18th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Not too bad. We made a lot of changes there and it seemed to do well for the car-make it a bit freer. Little too free in the throttle for qualifying but I think it's going to be real good for the race. Getting tired of qualifying good and running bad in the race. This time we're a little too free and hopefully we'll have a good race car.

ANY CONCERNS ABOUT TIRES HERE? I don't have any concerns. We didn't feel like we leaned on it too hard last time we were here. I wish they would have changed it, but they didn't, so if everyone else is willing to run on them, we are too.

Jeff Gordon -- #24 DuPont Chevrolet
21st position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Well, you know, I knew we were going to struggle a little bit in qualifying. We were pretty loose yesterday making our qualifying runs. We picked up quite a bit from yesterday but not near a lot of these guys. But I feel like our race package is better than the first time we were here and you hope that when you don't qualify good, you'll have something for the race. We'll see what happens.

YOU STARTED PRETTY DEEP BACK HERE IN JUNE AND CAME HOME WITH A GOOD FINISH. DOES THAT MEAN GOOD THINGS FOR TOMORROW? Well, I mean, this is one track where you can start further back on and feel comfortable if you have a good race car. You know, you can work your way through up there. That's what we're crossing our fingers for right now. We certainly don't want to be starting back there, but it's just kind of where we're at.

Dave Blaney -- #07 Jack Daniel's Chevrolet
22nd position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? It was okay. We got way too loose in the tunnel in Turn 3 and killed it. Getting to the tunnel I was really happy-I thought we had a good lap going. There are a couple little places where it adds up big here. Not bad, though.

Bobby Labonte -- #18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet
23rd position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Well, that was better than we ran yesterday-I think it was, anyway. It wasn't as good as we'd like to have it, but for whatever reason after the first lap that we ran yesterday in practice, we've never been able to go faster than that, but we're pretty consistent. Pretty happy about that, so maybe we'll be good for tomorrow.

Michael Waltrip -- #15 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet
Qualified 24th; Is expected to start from rear

Note: Accident during qualifying

WHAT HAPPENED ON YOUR LAP? I just misjudged how much speed I could take through the tunnel, I guess. Shot in there, I was real happy with it and I knew I was on a good run. It just got loose with me. I was real lucky that I didn't do much more damage to the NAPA Chevy than I did to it. But, unfortunately we heard it a little bit.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES FOR SUNDAY? Well, we had a really good car in practice yesterday and I really look forward to it.

Tony Eury, Jr.
Crew Chief -- #15 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet

GIVE US AN UPDATE ON THE REPAIRS YOU'RE MAKING TO THE CAR We do have to start in the rear for working on the car. But we just want to make sure; it's a long race and you can pass here-it's a big track. And you've got plenty of time to get back up to the front. We know we've got a good enough car to win this thing. We're just going to basically make sure everything is good like it was in practice.

WHAT WAS THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE? We basically knocked the crush panels out of the right rear. You know, it didn't look like there was any concrete in the wheel or anything. You know, my hat is off to Michael-he was trying and that's what I pay him to do. He's not giving up on us even though we made some changes and we're pulling for him and going to get him a win before this year is over.

Bobby Hamilton, Jr. -- #32 Tide Chevrolet
27th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Yeah, we knew yesterday on our qualifying lap we got really loose and we tightened the crap out of it, and it was still free today. So, what that usual (means) is that we take the tape off of it and it makes a pretty good race car. I'm looking forward to Sunday's race.

YOU SEEM TO BE PRETTY HAPPY. IS TEAM MORALE LOOKING UP? Yeah, it's getting better. Anytime you can see progression in practices-we get better every run we make. Each qualifying run we get a little bit better. So, that really gets the guys jumped up.

Kyle Busch -- #5 Kellogg's Chevrolet
28th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? It was decent. I mean, we probably could have ran a little bit better had we gone out there in qualifying trim, but we just wanted to be safe and get some knowledge on what this piece would do for tomorrow in the race. We just went out there in race trim and left the air pressures a little high to see if we could get a better lap time, which is what we did. So, I'm happy with that. It's as good as we're going to get with just rolling off the truck. We'll go after them tomorrow. We started 39th here a month ago and if we start a little bit better now, that's just further towards the front

Robby Gordon -- #7 Jim Beam Chevrolet
29th position

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? Well, we ran a 70 yesterday and a bunch of guys picked up and we didn't seem to pick up as much. But, that should get the Jim Beam car in the show. We feel good about that.

HOW IS THE TRACK? Well, the track is a little different. You're not able to run over the curb there in turn 2-it's a monster. You can't ride the curb anymore. And, the bumps-it's forced us to kind of run out there a little more. We're kind of chattering our tires across them a little bit.

Mike Wallace -- #4 Lucas Oil Chevrolet
31st position

You know, we're here on a different agenda than most other teams. We're trying to get in the race first, so I can't do anything really crazy and go for that all-out qualifying run. I've just got to beat four cars and that's what we look at week in and week out. And then have a good race on Sunday.

P.J. Jones -- #34 Chevrolet
36th position

It was good. It was a little loose-a little too free coming off Turn 3, little too tight down in Turn 1 and 2. We changed the body on this car the last three races which has just been a big improvement. We just struggled the last three races and these guys worked real hard. They went back and put a new body on the car and we kind of updated it and you know, if definitely benefited from that.

Carl Long -- #00 Champion Builders Chevrolet
Did Not Qualify

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ACCIDENT OUT THERE ON THE LAP Driving into turn 1 on the qualifying lap, I suppose we just had a little too much rear brake into it. Bit loose when I got on the brakes there in the corner, and then you adjust your entry just trying to keep the car behind you. I screwed up the entry to the corner and just tried to get through the corner, got all out of shape. Just tried to get through the corner to make my second lap and got up in the loose stuff and the wall sucked me to it.

WHAT IS THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE? Mainly sheet metal damage but we don't have a provisional-we had to get in on time. This is my crew's home town, it's where I first started driving for them last year and we made the race. I just choked this year. Both times I've been to Pocono this year, it hasn't been good to me. I really felt like we had a car to be in the race and I'm just disappointed that I let everybody down.

Hermie Sadler -- #92 Chevrolet
Did Not Qualify

HOW WAS YOUR LAP? I doubt it's going to be good enough, but I want to thank the guys for working really hard. I don't have a lot of experience here and we worked on it and worked on it and just can't get the car really comfortable for me. Especially in that tunnel turn over there. So maybe we'll get in, I hope. But, it's not what we wanted. We wanted to be more competitive and run a better speed. But, we'll see what happens. Hope to do some more races the second half of the season and improve, but right now we're not where we need to be.
