Sadler Hoping to Pad Top-10 Position in the Pennsylvania 500
Elliott Sadler and the M&M'S team are eighth in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series point standings as they travel to Pocono Raceway for the Pennsylvania 500. Sadler's best start at Pocono is third and best finish to date is ninth, which he scored in 2003. Crew chief Todd Parrott has made the trip to victory lane twice with Robert Yates Racing teammate Dale Jarrett.
QUOTING M&M'S DRIVER ELLIOTT SADLER: "Pocono has been a good track for Robert Yates Racing. Dale Jarrett has been the man there many, many times. We had a situation last race where the M&M'S car became so aerodynamically sensitive in traffic it was close to impossible for me to pass anyone. We have really stepped up our game for this second Pocono race and have a different car the guys at the shop built specifically for Pocono and Indianapolis.
"At this point last season we didn't have the same performance or consistency. This team finished 22nd in the points last year and within one year we can now consider a bad day running 15th. So there are some definite changes with this team since last season. Todd has come in and really reorganized our vision and focus and has geared us toward what we need to be concentrating on every week. He knows how to win a championship and he understands the effort that everyone needs to put forth to have that winning combination.
"People keep asking if being in the top 10 has been distracting and to be honest this is the first time in my career I have been in this position so to be in this situation for both myself and M&M'S is really exciting. It is nerve wracking sometimes especially with it getting down to the last handful of races before the start of the "Chase," but it is only because of what we can potentially lose out on by not doing our best. As a driver I have never been more focused in my life."
QUOTING M&M'S CREW CHIEF TODD PARROTT: "We are taking a brand new car to Pocono that we built specifically for the races at Pocono and Indy. We tested it in Indy and feel like it's a good enough car to where we will race it at Pocono, wipe the champagne off it and race it again at the Brickyard. The car has a sister car which is equally as good, and tested just as well so we are pretty psyched.
"We have done a lot of testing so far this year and have two left at this point. Once we get to these last few races we are just concentrating on staying in the top 10. We have had good and bad times this year, but we have been up there all year long. I see this team getting better every week but we have had some little crazy things going wrong that has kept us out of the top five."
QUOTING M&M'S SPOTTER BRETT GRIFFIN: "I had forgotten how difficult of a race Pocono is to spot. On the start of the race and on restarts going into turn one can be a spotter's nightmare. The cars are going directly away from us so it is very tough to help Elliott with cars on his inside and outside because of the illusion depth perception plays on my eyes. It's a huge track and the tunnel turn is a long way away from the spotter's stand so I really have to be on my game when Elliott is in traffic back there. On the other hand, when Elliott is not in traffic Pocono can be of the easiest tracks on the circuit for a spotter."
