Labonte Finishes 28th in TaxSlayer.com Chevy at Pocono
Pocono, PA, (Aug. 1, 2010) - Bobby Labonte drove the No. 71 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet Impala SS to a 28th place finish in today's running of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway.
With the threat of rain in the area and overcast skies the TRG Motorsports crew was charged with adjusting the car throughout the race. Early green flag running had the team a little behind, needing a yellow to adjust on the red TaxSlayer.com Chevy. Later in the 500-mile race the team was able to rally back and put in a solid finish.
Labonte, the 2000 Sprint Cup Series Champion, was able to navigate the treacherous last third of the race. With 35 laps remaining the field went under a red flag for nearly a half-hour due to a big crash on the back stretch. Labonte caught his breath in the No. 71 TaxSlayer.com Chevy in 31st for the run to the checker. During the red flag period, rain drops began falling on the Long Pond area. With the track dry, Labonte was able to improve his finish in the waning moments of the event.
"We just missed it a little early on with air pressure and track position," Labonte said. "We needed a caution to come in and make some adjustments and it just did not come in time. When we were able to pit, Dan (Stillman, crew chief) and the guys made some adjustments which definitely helped the car. We were able to make some more changes throughout the event which really helped us to move forward."
The changing weather conditions changed the track from practice and qualifying.
"Early on the track was slippery. As it cooled off and after the rain at the end, the track picked up grip. The set-up we had on the car for the race had us a little too tight. Once we were able to free it up, the car came to me. We had a good piece at the end, just ran out of laps."
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will travel to Watkins Glen International Raceway for the Helluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen to be run on Sunday, August 8.
