DID IT GIVE YOU ANY WARNING? "Yeah, a little bit. It went down on one cylinder."
IT'S A HUMBLING SPORT. LAST WEEK YOU WERE ON TOP AND NOW THIS. "That's disgusting. We've spent half of the races this year - I'll bet we've spent seven of the 14 in the garage and that's just terrible, but that's how it goes I guess. We got lucky and won last week and didn't break. That would have been my luck if it would have broke last week. Something uncharacteristic happened last week and I'm awful happy about that, but this does us in for the top 10 in points."
YOU WERE SO PUMPED UP AFTER QUALIFYING. "I just wanted to be in the points thing. It's just one race out of 500 or 600 or 700 - whatever I've run - it's not that big of a deal. The big deal is that now that does it. We were already too far back but might have had a chance, but that's the last one there. We couldn't afford to have that happen in the last 14 before the cut off. It's a disappointment to everybody that works on this thing, but we don't feel that the things that have happened to us are in our control. We have to accept them."
YOU HAD A GOOD CAR. "We had a real good car. We were still adjusting on it and stuff, but the Viagra team has done a great job the last couple of months. They're getting me in really good stuff and we were gonna have us a good points day, but you've got to finish these things. Now we can just forget about the points and take 'em as they come. There are some more wins in this team yet this year."
IF YOU ARE OUT OF THE POINTS CHASE, HOW DOES THIS AFFECT THE REST OF YOUR SEASON? "Well, we could still make it into the top 10 if they didn't have the cut off thing at 26 races, but it's done now. What's done is done. We can't fix it and we can't change it. We're broke here again and we'll go on to the next one."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 Pennzoil/National Guard/Subway Taurus (Finished 11th)
"We had a really good day. We put the wrong tires on the car. The left-front on the right-front and the right-front on the left-front or something like that and we lost all of our track position. It's so hard to pass. Once I got back there in all the dirty air, I couldn't get the thing to go anymore. It was just tight, tight, tight. We kept freeing it up, but with all those restarts guys would get a big, huge run and three-wide. I did all I could do and we ended up 11th, but I think we had a car we could run in the top five with for sure."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Keep It Genuine Taurus (Finished 19th)
"It definitely was a discouraging day, but there were some positives at the end with the way circumstances went. I really can't get on the pit crew because we were off in the corners pretty bad. We had a miscue on a pit stop that cost us and we had to come back in to pit under green and that really put us in a hole. But our performance, we finished 19th or 20th and that's about all we had. It's hard to get upset with them, but if we ever get our act right on the car, we've got to have our stops figured out to where we don't have problems. I'm more discouraged with the car not handling than I am with pit road."
DALE JARRETT - No. 88 UPS Taurus (Finished 26th)
"I don't know what to say. We had a good car and that's the way it goes some days. When things don't go your way, they just don't."
THAT WAS THE NEW ENGINE, RIGHT? "Yeah, but I don't know if that had anything to do with it. It ran great and performed great all day. We needed just a little bit to get with those guys at the end, but I'm very happy because it's the first time we've run an in-house chassis this year and it worked really well. Hopefully, things are looking up for us."
IS IT TIME TO TRIM THESE RACES AT POCONO TO 400 MILES? "That would have been nice today obviously, but that's something they need to think about. It's a really long day and it's hard on equipment, but that's not for me to decide. I think it would probably be a better race for the fans if it were that distance."
KURT BUSCH - No. 97 Sharpie/IRWIN Taurus (Finished 5th)
"We did a great job today in the pits to make the right calls. We were fast enough on the race track for a top 10, but we were able to maneuver into a top five with just a great handling car. I've got to thank IRWIN Industrial Tools for sticking with us. This is our first top five with this car otherwise it's been Sharpie with the top fives, but thanks again to the crew. It was a team effort today and we'll just have to go to work and learn what we need to have for the next time."
DID YOU MAKE A LOT OF ADJUSTMENTS? "Yeah, this track is really cool with the way that all three corners are different. You have to adjust to be good at one and try to fix another. It's a unique race track and I have fun each time we come here."
A GOOD RUN TODAY. "We had great pit strategy and knowing when to pit. We had good fuel mileage today and I just have to thank this Ford engine for sticking together. We had our moments through the race, but we just didn't quite have enough speed to challenge, but a top five is a good day."
IT WAS A PATIENT RUN FOR YOU TODAY. "It was just one lap at a time. When we could pass a car, we did. When we had to give up a spot, we did."
YOU PROBABLY WANTED TO GO GREEN AT THE END AND TRY TO PICK UP ANOTHER SPOT, RIGHT? "That would have been good. This place provides for great racing, but at the end there were too many cautions and too much oil on the track, and then the sod was in turn three. There's not much NASCAR can do. It seems like the race gets into its lulls in the middle, but then when we get to the end of the race everybody is going for the gusto."
WERE YOU CONFUSED AT ALL ON THE PIT ROAD RULES TODAY? "They said in the driver's meeting that we were gonna have issues and I saw the green flag waving. I was caught in the truck series one day at IRP when the green flag was waving and then they brought it back. There's not much you can do. When it's green for me, I'm gonna come in."
JEFF BURTON - No. 99 Duke Children's Hospital Taurus (Finished 24th)
"We drove up to 15th from last and there was a problem off turn four. It wasn't Nemechek's fault, but he ran through the right-rear quarterpanel and got that messed up. After that I couldn't drive it. We came in and fixed it and the thing was pretty good, but then the motor started to not run right. For the last 30-35 laps I had to try to take it easy on the engine and it ended up breaking."
