"We made a few slight adjustments and the car was there. I just got in a little hard into turn one and never got the car down to the bottom. That probably hurt me a tenth and a half or two tenths. The driver got a little excited. I haven't had a car quite that good in quite a while, so I was trying to lay down a really good lap. It's nice when you can not make a perfect lap and still have a reasonable lap time. It's not gonna kill us, whereas in the past we haven't had that luxury."
CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE NEW ENGINE? "The engine certainly helps, but this is a new race car. When you get something that drives good, if you happen to miss a little bit in one corner, it goes through the other corners good, but the engine does help. It's allowing us to turn the rpm's that we've been racing against, so that's the biggest thing. I can't tell you where the speed is because you're fast here anyway, but I know from looking at the rpm's that it's where we need to be versus what we've been racing."
MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (Qualified 4th)
"I'm a little bit tired. I haven't been this busy in a while and I'm about out of shape. I need to get back into shape of going wide open, but we did some testing this week as well with the Viagra car and with Matt's Gatorade truck, so between that and all the other hype that's been going on, it's been a busy week. They brought me another good race car here and we're feeling pretty good about it."
YOU WERE FAST IN PRACTICE. HOW WAS YOUR LAP? "Yeah, it was a good lap. It was not good enough for the pole, but we're excited to be close to the front. We haven't done that a lot. Of course, we did that at Dover, but we may wind up closer to the front here than we even were at Dover. We've got a great race car and we'll go racing."
MATT KENSETH - No. 17 DEWALT Tools Taurus (Qualified 15th)
"We backed up what we practiced, but everybody else is picking up. The car didn't handle quite exactly like we wanted to in turn one, but the rest of the track was good. We just didn't get a real great lap out of it. We try not to give up anything anywhere. We were good today. I think we were eighth in practice. Instead of trying to run eighth, we were trying to run first and trying to go real fast and just got in there real deep and it kind of slid up the track. We had a good handling car, we just got in there a little deep and kind of lost it a little bit."
JEFF BURTON - No. 99 Duke Children's Hospital Taurus (Qualified 44th) - "Something happened to the transmission. We normally don't have transmission and gear problems, but Matt had a problem with his on his second lap and I had a problem with mine on my first lap. Matt didn't get a second lap and I didn't get any laps, so it's disappointing. Everybody always says this, but that was the best two and three coming to the green that we had all day. The speed was good and it felt good. I really had a lot of speed going into turn one and I was excited. I was like, 'Yeah, we're gonna have a good lap,' but when I went to get the gear it would never go into gear. Like I said, Matt had the same problem on his second lap. I don't know what's going on, but I'm sure they'll figure it out."
ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (Qualified 12th)
"That was probably our loosest set of tires and we didn't expect the sun to come out and it did. Both of those things and trying to drive it hard made the car get really loose in turn one and really loose in the tunnel turn. That's pretty disappointing. It's a lot slower than anything we ran in practice, so we've kind of dug ourselves a hole. We've got a good race car for Sunday, so we'll just have to dig ourselves out of it."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 National Guard/Subway Taurus (Qualified 9th)
"That definitely wasn't what we needed for a lap, but these guys gave me a lot better car than the lap I put down right here - definitely a lot better car. But I just missed over there in the tunnel turn and missed a little bit coming off of four. It's hard to get this race track right. It's a challenging track and that's what I like about it. It's unfortunate because the 16 guys gave me an awesome race car. It probably should be in the top five, but we'll probably in the top 15 or 20. Still, I'm really excited for Sunday."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Keep It Genuine Taurus (Qualified 35th)
"This is the second time we've run this car and it's the same one we used our only provisional with at Charlotte. We might just about have to use one today. I don't think we'll have to use one, but it's close. I hate it for these guys. They're working hard, but it just isn't clicking. In race trim last week we were a legitimate 13th-place car on the race track and then got in that big wreck. We're better in race trim than we are in qualifying trim and I don't know where we're missing it at."
