+ NOT SO FUN IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN

Scott Speed and the No. 82 team's charge from a lap down to a decent finish helped Red Bull Racing Team avert total disaster in the desert.

82 . SCOTT SPEED
START/FINISH: 2/21

TALE OF TWO BRAKE PEDALS: On lap 38, Speed radioed that "my brakes are gone." About an hour later, Speed noted the brakes returned. But at that point, he was running a lap down. Speed, however, persevered and got the free pass on lap 189. He remained on the lead lap until he finished 21st — easily his best finish at Phoenix. GLAD YOU'RE BACK: "Heck of a nice feeling going into the corner and not think we're going to die." — Speed on brakes/slowing down VITAL SIGNS: Speed slipped one position in points to 22nd. He's 29 points out of the top 20. STAT THAT MATTERS: Speed qualified second Friday. That's the fourth time he's qualified on the front row in 47 Sprint Cup starts. His first pole doesn't seem to be far off.

83 . BRIAN VICKERS
START/FINISH: 21/37

PREDICTABLE CHAIN OF EVENTS: Pretty simple script here. A left-rear tire gave way on lap 56. Vickers lost control. The car spun around and hit the wall. Hard. On the driver's side. BV went to the care center. The car went to the garage. Night ruined. UNANIMOUS OPINION: "It's pretty bad." — Vickers, crew chief Ryan Pemberton and spotter Chris Lambert on the damage to the No. 83

VITAL SIGNS: Vickers took a hard hit in points, too. He dropped from 12th to 17th — 69 points out of the top 12.

STAT THAT MATTERS: If it weren't for the timely execution of a laundry list of repairs by the No. 83 crew, the plummet in points may have been worse. Vickers re-entered the race on lap 144, 88 laps down in 42nd. Running in ride-around mode, he picked up five positions to finish 37th. The result? Fifteen extra points.
