Kim Wood Hall - Wood Sister Co-owns, coordinates Wood Brothers Racing.
Every team needs support people, and in the case of the Motorcraft Racing Wood Brothers team co-owner Kim Wood Hall fills that position. Hall is Glen and Bernece Wood's daughter, and sister to Eddie and Len Wood. Kim works at the Stuart, Virginia, shop and, like her brothers and the elder Woods before them, is a hands-on participant in the running of the team.
And just what does she do?
KIM WOOD HALL - co-owner, #21 Motorcraft Racing Ford Taurus Wood Brothers Racing Team:
"I don't know where to start. I do all the accounts payable and receivable, all the insurance and taxes. This week I've been working on the artwork for the new truck, getting the quotes and getting and it painted. I normally don't do diecast approvals, but I even did some last week for Motorcraft because I've got the car here that I can look at. But I do make sure that everybody has the right artwork and make sure that it is used correctly. I just ordered the uniforms for next year. My assistant does the travel now but if it rains over the weekend or something, I'm the one they (Eddie or Len) call to get the rooms extended or to find others. I just try to do whatever the guys need to help them along the way. If that means going to the dry cleaners and picking up their cleaning, or whatever.
"And then, of course, you've got the corporate stuff. Because we're all equal share holders, we work on that stuff together. And we have our daily 'board meeting' at the dinner table at Mama's. (The family has lunch together every weekday they are in Stuart at Glen and Bernece's house.)
"I update the web site with stories that I receive. I just have to post those, but I update press releases and I can update the pictures. I do that for all our drivers - the Motorcraft driver (Elliott Sadler), and our truck series driver Jon Wood (Eddie's son) and now Len's son, Keven, is going to start driving Legends cars, too.
NOW THAT THE SEASON IS WINDING DOWN WILL YOUR WORKLOAD SLOW UP?
"No, not necessarily. For next year we've already booked all of the hotel rooms, but we'll start next on cars and air travel. And we are still testing. Ford has Kentucky rented every Tuesday so we will take advantage of that. And we will be going to the wind tunnels over the winter with the new cars and with Ricky (Rudd) trying out new things so there will be travel to plan with that.
"We will take time off at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We're all going somewhere over the Thanksgiving holiday. Because we all eat together every day we're all going different directions that weekend. That is one of the few really down times that we've got. We'll close the shop Thursday and Friday that week.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR OTHER TEAM?
(During her free time, Kim owns a mini-sprint short track team with her husband Terry Hall. Terry is the driver.)
"The banquet for them is this Friday night and Terry finished third in overall points. He had six wins, and for a rookie that's pretty good. He was runner up in the rookie of the year championship. I am the car owner, and his crew chief, and his photographer and his media person. (Laughing) I just do it all on that team. Even though we do racing stuff all week long, for Terry it's different. It's just not the same as working on it here. It's enjoyment for Terry. And just seeing how much fun he's had. And I've had fun with it, too. He's run good and that makes it fun.
"His races are always on Friday night at Oak Level just north of Martinsville, and then on Saturday or Sunday either we've been at one of Jon's races or one of Terry's brother's races or a Winston Cup race."
