Nemechek Extends Finishing Streak Despite Being Collected in Multicar Accident

PHOENIX (April 22, 2006) -- The only good news for Joe Nemechek in Saturday night's Nextel Cup event at Phoenix International Raceway is that he extended his streak of running at the finish to 40 consecutive races.

For a while it looked liked Nemechek's streak was in danger of being snapped after his 01 U.S. Army Chevrolet was collected in a multicar accident on Lap 99 of 312.

Nemechek brought the crippled racecar to the garage where the 01 crew repaired the front-end damage, which included a radiator replacement. Nemechek returned to the track on Lap 123 and ran the remainder of the race with a hoodless racecar.

"This was a long way to come for something like this to happen," said Nemechek, who posted a 35th-place result. "There was a lot of smoke out there and cars going in every direction. For a second or two I thought I had the wrecks cleared, but then the (No.) 38 car (Elliott Sadler) came shooting up the track right in front of me. I didn't have a prayer and all I could do was plow into the side of Elliott's car."

"Finishing 35th is awful, but I am still proud of the Army spirit this team demonstrated tonight by getting the car fixed and back on the track," Nemechek continued.

When Nemechek crashed, he was running in the low 30s on the one-mile oval.

"We were still massaging the Army Chevy and I am confident that we would have figured it out and come away with a decent finish tonight if we had not gotten caught up in that wreck," said Nemechek. "We'll suck it up and get them next week at the big track."

Nemechek was referring to the next Sunday's (April 30) Cup race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, the biggest track on the NASCAR circuit.
