82. SCOTT SPEED
TWO-STEPPED IN TEXAS: After finishes of 18th and 16th in the previous two races at Texas, Speed ended up a lap down in 27th on Sunday. He started 23rd and moved into the top 15 despite the No. 82 Red Bull Toyota not turning all that well. Just past halfway, vibrations began haunting the car. The team corrected the problem, but by then Speed lost all the track position he gained in the first 170 laps.
PERSEVERANCE PAYS: Speed started second at Phoenix last April and went on to earn the best finish of his career there. On lap 38, he radioed that "my brakes are gone." About an hour later he noted, "got the brakes back." But at that point, he was running a lap down. Speed, however, persevered and got the free pass on lap 189 and remained on the lead lap until he finished 21st.
VITAL SIGNS: Ranks 29th in the driver standings - 30 points behind 28th- place Sam Hornish Jr.
LOOSE LUG NUTS I: Speed will make his 75th Sprint Cup start Sunday. ... Four times Speed has qualified on the front row in his career, with three of those coming at the final two tracks on the schedule. He has one front-row start at Phoenix and two at Homestead. The other is Chicago.
83 . KASEY KAHNE
LUCKY 13: In the 250th start of his Sprint Cup career, Kahne finished 13th at Texas for his second top 15 in three races with Red Bull Racing Team. The No. 83 team made early changes before Kahne climbed to as high as 12th, and he stayed close to there for the final 140 laps. He made the most green-flag passes on the day (145).
'UNIQUE AND NEAT': Kahne's Phoenix career started with a fifth-place finish in November 2004. Most recently, he finished 39th last April. And he's had about every other type of finish in between. "It's a pretty unique race track," Kahne said. "To me, it's a neat place to race. You need good forward drive off the corner and getting your car to turn all day off the corner will be the key. Each corner drives differently, and you really have to have your car set up well in order to be competitive."
VITAL SIGNS: The No. 83 ranks 26th in the car owner standings - 50 points behind the No. 12 in 25th. Kahne ranks 21st in the driver standings - one point behind 20th-place AJ Allmendinger.
LOOSE LUG NUTS II: Of the 22 tracks currently on the Sprint Cup schedule, Kahne has failed to lead a lap at only two - Phoenix and Watkins Glen. ... In the past 11 races at Phoenix, Kahne has spent 1,526 laps (43.6 percent) in the top 15.
