KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 SHELL/PENNZOIL CHEVROLET met with media and discussed the length of the race, the season to-date, the sun and racing at Phoenix, and more.
HOW IS YOUR CUP CAR? "Fine."
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CUP RACE BEING 65 LAPS LONGER? IS THAT GOING TO BE A BIG DIFFERENCE? "I think it is. I think you are going to have to manage your brakes a lot more than you used to. This is one of the heaviest braking race tracks that we go to, so that is going to be right on the edge if you use them like you have in the past and they were already on the edge then you are just going to have to manage that part of it and you are going to add at least one more pit stop in there so it's definitely going to add a few new elements that haven't been in there in the past."
YOU THINK IT'S A GOOD THING OR A BAD THING? "It really doesn't matter to me. I think it's just a few more laps."
AFTER HAVING SUCH A GOOD SEASON SO FAR, DOES THAT MAKE GETTING OVER MARTINSVILLE ANY EASIER? "I just drive them. I don't put them together."
SO IT IS EASY FOR YOU TO GET OVER? "Yep"
WE HAVE HAD A COUPLE WEEKS OFF THE LAST MONTH AND NOW GO 14 WEEKS STRAIGHT. HOW DO YOU GUYS PREPARE FOR A LONG RUN LIKE THAT? "I have raced every week and I don't do anything different than what I have done the last few weeks. We just go about what we are doing and go from there."
SIX RACES IN, HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOURSELF AND THE TEAM? "I think it's been fair. You know, we have had a chance to win a few races and the performance has been good and when it hasn't we have been able to recover and make a good, decent day out of it and that is what you have to do."
HOW DIFFERENT IS THE TRACK GOING TO BE TOMORROW NIGHT FROM WHAT YOU HAVE PRACTICED TO AND HOW WILL IT AFFECT YOUR SETUP? "It's been goofy the whole time we have been here. It's been loose to start with and now it's tight and so everybody is confused so it's a total guess."
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE RON HORNADY DAY IN PALMDALE AND THE EVENTS YOU PARTICIPATED IN BAKERSFIELD? "You know it was pretty cool that they named "Ron Hornaday Way" in Palmdale and we went to go and do all that so he has had a long career, and those are his roots and that is where he raised his whole family and that is pretty neat.
"We had our first foundation event and that went really well and we raised a lot of money and had a lot of participation at home and it's always fun to give back to your home community."
IS TEXAS GOING TO BE A TRUE TEST FOR THE SPOILER? "I think so. I mean that is the only place that is going to be really fast to get the true effect of how it's going to react around other cars but I think everybody learned today that they will spin out. It's hard to spin them out with the wing so we had a lot of spinouts today."
SPEAKING OF TEXAS, IT'S THE NEXT 1.5 MILE TRACK, WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO SUCCESS THERE? "Oh, I don't know, I'm worried about getting it going this week."
KHI HAD A REALLY GOOD WEEKEND LAST WEEKEND IN NASHVILLE WHAT KIND OF MOMENTUM DOES THAT BUILD FOR YOU AND THE TEAM? "I think it's been good because KHI has won 3 of the first 5 races on the Nationwide side and that has been a great start for us and the trucks have been the same way in winning half the races so it's been a lot of fun and the hardest part is just to keep it going and keep pushing forward and keeping the progress that we have had with the vehicles to keep making them faster each week and to do what you need to do to continue to win."
