RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge Intrepid) - Wins 10th pole of season
"We started off paying a little catch up today. There wasn't a huge amount of difference, but maybe just a little difference than the way it was. We unloaded and we were OK. It was up to me to get my marks right. I knew Brian (Vickers) put down a pretty good lap. I asked him if there wasn't anything left in the track. I think he was trying to tell me no. He did a great job.
"It doesn't get old. It always will be a great confidence booster for the team. It kicks off a great weekend. Sometimes you can become overconfident and get complacent, and that will hurt you. My first pole at Charlotte, I got the pole and Jeff Gordon went out and qualified. I ran a .14 or .15 and he ran a .20. He came in and said, 'man, you're not supposed to be doing this. I've won five out of the last so many. To me that was a great compliment. For Brian, I think it's the same way. I'm proud to get the pole and be the guy who's got the most poles this year, but for him to do what he's done, he's got a lot of feathers in his cap right now.
"We haven't been good here in race trim. I don't exactly know why. I think Matt and the guys have learned a lot this year to apply to the racetrack right now. We used to come out here and test and it would be 100 degrees. We'd come back to race and it would be 75 or 80 and it was like, 'what do I do now?'
"We've learned throughout this past year. Some tracks we've gone to the second or fourth times.
"I saw a brief part of the replay, not the entire situation (of late-lap accident last week at Atlanta). I know that I was clear when I pulled in front of him (8 car). I know that my car was straight when I was in front of him. I believe he hit me again. The point being I was on the straightaway when I got hit. I think he was a little more giving at Martinsville.
COMMENTS IMMEDIATELY AFTER QUALIFYING
"We unloaded OK, and the guys kept working on it and made it better. I think the track is in really good shape. I wish they had put up the safety barriers, but I think they did a real good job going to the next step of development. I think all the changes are definitely positive. There's always room for improvement. I'd like to hope that lap will hold up for the pole, but if it doesn't, we've got a good starting spot."
