Petty testing this week at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Aug. 18, 1998) Richard Petty's Pontiacs have a second, two thirds and a fifth-place finish in the past four races at Martinsville Speedway. Now Kyle Petty plans to use one of his father's cars in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series NAPA AutoCare 500 on Sunday, Sept. 27. Tuesday, Kyle Petty tested one of his Hot Wheels Pontiacs and a No. 43 STP Pontiac at Martinsville Speedway. Petty hasn't tested at Martinsville in several years, but believes using one of the Petty Enterprises cars could mean a great finish next month. "It's been a long time since we've come here to test and one of the reasons is because 43 (Richard Petty) has given us a car," Petty said. "This is a car they ran at Pocono (Raceway in Pennsylvania) and it's a copy of their Martinsville car. So they said they would run it at Pocono and we could have it after that. "They have run really well and we have not run that good the last couple of years up here. We have the same motors and same stuff, but our cars are different. So we opted to bum a car off them and come up here." Petty said both cars had improved over the day. "As the day has gone on everything has gotten better, we have gotten faster," Petty said. "We have been doing motor stuff today and tomorrow we will do chassis stuff." Bud Pole Qualifying for the NAPA AutoCare 500 is Sept. 25.
