DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 24, 1998)

NASCAR officials have announced they have levied a penalty of $2,500 each to NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division driver Phil Parsons and Gene Nead, crew chief for Parsons' No. 10 Dura-Lube Chevrolet.

The fines follow NASCAR's actions on March 21 prior to the NASCAR Busch Series' Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington Raceway, in which it suspended Nead. Today's penalties placed Nead on suspension until April 15 and placed both Parsons and Nead on probation until Dec. 31, 1998.

The penalties were levied following an altercation in the NASCAR Busch Series garage area on Friday evening following the series' final practice of the day.

Parsons' actions were deemed in violation of Section 12-4 A in the 1998 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division Rule Book: "Any member who performs an act or participates in actions deemed by NASCAR Officials as detrimental to automobile racing or to NASCAR..."

Nead's actions were deemed in violation of Section 12-4 F in the 1998 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division Rule Book: "Any member who participates in fights in pits, track or on the race premises..."

Parsons said he would act as crew chief during the three races scheduled during Nead's suspension: this weekend's Moore's Snacks 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway and events April 4 at Texas Motor Speedway and April 11 at Hickory Motor Speedway.

"This is not an ideal situation but we have some good people on this race team and we're ready to pick up the slack," said Parsons, who is 26th in NASCAR Busch Series points after five races. "We are moving on from here, we've discussed this situation and said our apologies and it's water over the dam at this point."
