Ø Starting in his 83rd Winston Cup points event, Steve Park in the Dale Earnhardt, Inc.-owned #1 Pennzoil Chevrolet Monte Carlo heads to Dover, Del., for the MBNA Gold 400 this Sunday afternoon at Dover Downs International; shown live on TNN beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.
Ø Starting in the 17th spot during the event in June, Steve Park in the #1 Pennzoil Chevrolet posted at 19th-place finish on the "Monster Mile." Early in the race, Park was one of 12 cars on the lead lap before a lengthy green-flag period brought the hard charging and race winner Tony Stewart around the yellow Pennzoil car. Later in the race, Park got caught in the pits during a caution and was put another lap down from the leaders as one of six cars four laps behind the leaders. With race slowed by only 10 cautions for 58 laps, just five cars remained on the lead lap of the 400-lap event.
Ø With an average finish of 13.75 at Dover Downs, Park seeks to repeat his top-10 performance last September on the mile track. Scoring one of his five top-10 finishes while at the "Monster Mile," Park completed the 400-mile race in the ninth spot last year.
Ø After the race in New Hampshire, Steve Park decided to enjoy some of the east coast and drove his Harley-Davidson motorcycle down the coast to Dover. Making several stops along the way, Park combined both business and pleasure on the four-day trek.
"We were a little disappointed in our finish last time here at Dover," said Park, who finished 19th on the Monster Mile earlier this season. "By bringing the car from Bristol, I definitely believe we'll get a better finish out of this visit. Knowing the success of that car gives us some extra confidence going into Dover."
"We were trying to take a bad day and turn it into something good," said Park, alluding to the performance at Loudon. "Although we weren't running that well in the race, we were going to move up two spots in the points since the other drivers in front of us were behind us. That was until we got involved with the 97 car. Luckily, we were able to hold on to 13th in the points standings and still have a reasonable chance at the 11th spot."
"DEI puts together two cars specifically built for cement tracks," said crew chief Paul Andrews. "With the great finishes we had with the car from Bristol, we thought we'd try it out at Dover. We just missed the set up last time; the shock combination was just a little off. We've been working on different combinations, trying to figure out what will work -- we'll be okay for Dover this weekend."
