Elliott Sadler and No. 19 Dodge Team Ready for Off-Weekend
With so few breaks in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, it's with great anticipation that Elliott Sadler and the No. 19 Dodge Charger team of Gillett Evernham Motorsports look to a rare off-weekend. Sadler, who is 20th in Sprint Cup Series points after a 19th-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday, doesn't plan to stray too far from his Emporia, Va. home this Easter Weekend. Other crew members have their own plans. When they do return to racing action on March 30 at Martinsville Speedway, Sadler and team will debut the No. 19 McDonald's Dodge paint scheme.
"I'm pretty much going to lie low this weekend. We have been on a roll since the first week in January between testing in Daytona, then Las Vegas then California. Right after that, we went to Speedweeks in Daytona, then California and straight to Vegas to race. Then, we had a two-day test in Phoenix before heading to the Atlanta race. I'm telling you, me and the rest of this team are ready for a break. A few days of rest are a good thing, but to mainly spend time with our families is the best part."
Jeff Seaberg, Hauler Driver:
Seaberg, a licensed pilot who owns his own Cessna 172, plans to spend his off weekend skydiving. "Hey, some people like to sit on a beach, some like to go visit relatives and others like to hang out at the house when they're off. Me? I like to check them all out from the sky and then parachute down to join them. I log about 80,000 miles a year in our Freightliner truck, so I can't think of a better way to get farther away from that than skydiving."
Alan Mincey; Mechanic: Mincey and his fiancee, Kelli, are going camping.
"We've never been camping together. We have two black Labradors that we don't get to spend too much time with because we both work and travel in racing. So, we figured we'd take them with us and just get away from everything and we'd all try camping for the first time."
Mike McCarville; Shock Specialist:
"I have some trees I cut down last fall that I just haven't gotten around to cleaning up quite yet. Once I'm done chopping, cutting and doing what I need with those, I am taking to the highway on my Harley for some good riding."
Ed Watkins; Jackman:
He and his wife will spend time with their families. They're bringing their two Jack Russell Terriers, his wife's parents are bringing their two and her sister is bringing her two, as well. "We put our dogs through obstacle courses they just really enjoy. We also have some obstacle course fun with squirrel and rabbit hunting. When we get all the dogs together, it can get pretty darn busy because they have so much energy. The best part is, we get to spend time with our families and getting together for the off-weekend.
This week isn't all relaxation for Watkins. Watkins said he looks forward to pit practices and plans to use the extra time to work on the mechanics of quick pit stops. "During this week in practice we highlight the little things that take place during a pit stop. We can break down our pit stops and work on footwork, the way you pivot, skill work, the first lug nut you hit, the lug nut pattern and use it all for the next race. The way the season is, we have to use each week to prepare for the next race and what to expect at that particular track. With an off-weekend, you can work on the little things to improve your overall pit stop."
Rodney Childers, Team Director:
He isn't too sure about his plans, yet, but he does know one thing for sure. "I won't be racing."
Don Marvel, Rear Tire Carrier:
He can't say the same. Even though the Sprint Cup Series is off, there's still some NASCAR racing taking place. "Chase Miller is making his first start of the season for us and they asked if I'd help out. So, I'm heading to Nashville Superspeedway with the No. 9 Nationwide team on Saturday."
