"Turn 4 at Texas Motor Speedway, where former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace whacked the wall during the inaugural Winston Cup race last April 6, is getting a face-lift. An approximate 55-foot-by-300-foot section of the "transition" area of the 24-degree banking is scheduled to be milled and repaved, perhaps as early as next week.
The severe dropoff coming out of Turn 4, which is the fastest part of the track, made it hard for drivers to maintain control. The repair will take out the severity of the banking, making it more conducive to maintaining control and perhaps lead to some two-wide racing coming out of Turn 4.
Gossage said he hopes all repairs on the 1.5-mile trioval are completed before Jan. 27-28. That is when two-time and reigning Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon is scheduled to test Goodyear Eagle tires on the No. 24 DuPont Automotive Refinishes Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The sessions will be closed to the public, but will give Gordon first crack at an improved TMS."(Speedworld)
Dale Earnhardt will make the first laps "under the lights" at the Daytona Speedway on Saturday night 2/7 at 6pm for 20 laps. The public will be admitted free of charge to a section of the grandstands following the completion of Bud Pole Award Qualifying.(NASCAR Online)(1-27-98)
