For driver Greg Sacks and Cale Yarborough Motorsports, the decision of whether to test a Ford Taurus or a Thunderbird this week in the final preseason test at Daytona International Speedway was an easy one. Being the fastest of the Ford isn't simple, but it was something Sacks accomplished with impact this week.
Sacks, who will make his debut for Yarborough Feb. 7 in Bud Pole Qualifying for the Daytona 500, toured the 2.5-mile Daytona course in 47.440 seconds on Tuesday morning, at an average speed of 189.713. He had topped 190 mph on Monday, but on Tuesday most teams made only minute improvements and at the top of the chart not much changed.
Rounding out the top-five speeds Tuesday were: NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year candidate Kenny Irwin in the No. 28 Texaco Havoline Taurus at 47.541 seconds and 189.310 mph; Lake Speed in the No. 9 Cartoon Network Taurus at 47.662 seconds and 188.830 mph; Rusty Wallace, in one of three No. 2 Miller Lite Tauruses he and Buddy Baker tested, at 47.663 seconds and 188.826 mph, and surprising Billy Standridge in the Standridge Racing Thunderbird, who backed up his strong Talladega Bud Pole Qualifying from last fall with a test lap of 47.702 seconds and 188.671 mph. Rusty Wallace on the testing, from the RacingPR website press release:
1989 NASCAR Winston Cup champion Rusty Wallace, driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Taurus, turned in the fourth fastest speed on the day. He was clocked at 47.874 seconds, for an average speed of 188.826 mph.
"We don't want to come down here next month and come out of the box way behind," said Wallace. "I'm already looking past the learning procedure that we have had to go through with the new car. I'm just concerned with coming down here and running up front and winning the Daytona 500. This team and I are going to give all that we've got to accomplish that goal. I think we'll have a good car, but the whole key on the Taurus is the drag. If we can get around the drag issue, I think we'll be in good shape.
"We had a great shot to win the Daytona 500 last year. I finished second in the Bud Shootout, qualified fourth for the 500 and was running great up until the time we lost the motor. If we can avoid that happening again, I think we have a great shot." =====
