Ryan Newman rocketed to the Budweiser pole award at Dover International Speedway with a lap of 158.103 mph. Newman's lap eclipsed the field on his way to his sixth pole this season and 33rd of his career.
"Got to thank everyone from Penske Racing, a lot of great teamwork," Newman said. "I really enjoy this racetrack, the speed and the banking, I really like banked racetracks."
Earlier today, Newman also garnered the top spot for the Busch series race on Saturday. It's a great opportunity for Newman to gain some ground on point leader Tony Stewart, who qualified 31rst.
"We're not just racing Tony Stewart, we are racing everybody," Newman continued. "Everybody for a win and everyone for the championship."
Kasey Kahne was second with a lap of 157.074 mph.
"I think it was a good lap," said Kahne. "We ran about the same we ran in practice.we look forward to the race. We practiced a lot in race set-up; we ran about 30 laps before switching to qualifying set-up. I think we will have a good car for the weekend."
Kahne arch-nemesis from New Hampshire last weekend, Kyle Busch, will take the green flag from third. Busch put down a lap of 156.849 mph to gain his seventh top-10 of the year.
"Once we unloaded here I thought we had a pretty good shot at qualifying in the top ten," said Busch who apologized to Kahne on his way into the media center. "That was a great effort for us and I am looking forward to the race."
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jimmie Johnson complete the top five.
"It's a place where we've won, so there's always that confidence there," Earnhardt said. "Last year we raced our guts out for a couple of top-10s, especially the first one. We were two laps down with about 50 to go and ended up finishing third. That was one of the craziest races I'd ever seen.
"I'm a big fan of the place, enjoy going there, and hopefully we'll have a good car. We're taking a brand new car Tony Jr. built. It's no secret he builds great cars, and I'm looking forward to driving one of 'em again."
