Ryan Newman laid down the quickest lap during Bud pole qualifying for the NASCAR Nextel Cup teams at Atlanta Motor Speedway for his seventh pole of the 2005 season. Newman's lap of 193.928mph just eclipsed the rest of the field to earn Newman the 34th pole of his career.

"It was a good effort for the Alltel Dodge," said Newman. "I thought we were pretty good in practice, and I really enjoy qualifying here at night. The car was pretty stout. We were happy with it today in practice. It wasn't the fastest, but we felt like it would be a pretty good car.

Carl Edwards was second with a lap of 193.420 mph. "Our Office Depot car was awesome. I didn't think we were going to be that good.when they said second quick I just couldn't believe it."

Elliott Sadler grabbed his tenth top-three start of the year with third. "My lap was great, my guys did a great job," said Sadler who posted a lap of 193.373 mph. "That is the same car we had in Charlotte that we were so fast with. My guys put it back together and that is a great place for us to start."

Mark Martin and Dave Blaney completed the top five.

"It looks to me like we've pretty much peaked when we hoped to do it," Martin commented on his team. "We've been knocking out top-fives and top- 10s and I'm proud of these guys. I couldn't be happier with the opportunity to work with such great people that have such a strong commitment to winning."

Fifty-four cars attempted to qualify for the forty-three car field; failing to make the show were Johnny Sauter, Robby Gordon, Stuart Kirby, Mike Wallace, Jimmy Spencer, Mike Garvey, Morgan Shepard, Boris Said, JJ Yeley and Chad Chaffin.

Notably, Reed Sorenson making his first Cup start will roll off 22nd.

The front contenders for the Nextel Cup, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson, will start 10th and 12th respectively.
