The polesitter for the Ford EcoBoost 400 set the quick pace early in practice with a lap of 171.130mph (31.555-seconds) followed by Earnhardt Jr. (31.638), Truex (31.761), Kurt Busch (31.850), Kahne (31.958), Newman (32.020), Logano (32.048), Bayne (32.084), Blaney (32.095) and Suarez (32.162).

“I’m tight overall,” said Hamlin after 20 laps. “Definitely tighter than I was yesterday.” Hamlin also topped the charts in the ten lap averages (165.576mph). Truex was second, Brad Keselowski third, Kyle Busch fourth, Kyle Larson fifth and Kevin Harvick sixth.

Jamie McMurray hit the wall in Turn 3 in the first 10 minutes. Chase Elliott also tagged the wall after 11 laps. Keselowski bumped Suarez out of the top 10 with a lap of 167.900mph (32.162).

After the first 20 minutes of second practice, the top 10 remained the same. Suarez, McMurray, Michael McDowell, Aric Almirola, Paul Menard, Kyle Busch (167.188mph), Kevin Harvick (167.017mph), David Ragan, Matt DiBenedetto and Clint Bowyer Harvick’s 23 laps were the most completed.

NASCAR warned the spotters not to let their drivers speed down pit road. Several drivers were directed to complete pass-thru penalties during the 55-minute session. The No. 42 Ganassi Racing team called it a day half-way through.

Kahne’s 30 laps were the most completed with 20 minutes remaining. Truex tagged the Turn 2 wall and received slight damage to the right side of the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota.

With just under 15 minutes to go, Harvick radioed to his crew the car was “absolutely terrible.”

Daniel Hemric jumped in the No. 13 Germain Racing Chevy for Ty Dillon, who is on baby watch.

Austin Dillon ran the most laps at 49.
