NASCAR allows Cup teams an extra set of tires for Homestead finale

After listening to complaints over the weekend from drivers and teams, NASCAR will allow Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams to purchase an additional set of sticker tires for Sunday’s season finale.

Earlier this season, NASCAR had reduced the number of tire sets allowed in several races and Homestead-Miami Speedway was set to see a reduction from 11 sets allowed during the race to nine.

The option of purchasing another set will now give Cup teams the ability to have 10 sets during the championship race.

Homestead is an older surface that has seen significant tire wear this season. NASCAR did conduct an organizational test with the tires last month.

Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski, two of the drivers in the championship battle in the race, said he they were worried about having to conserve tires in the race.

“I think there’s going to be some different strategies and varying opportunities,” he said. “I feel like with the stages we know there’s going to be caution flags flying in those particular moments and we don’t need stage points so we can try to see what we need to get with however things fall.”

Added Keselowski: “I think that means you’re going to see the pit crew go a little slower and make sure you get the wheels tight and all that because you just can’t have an issue.

“Because remember with tire sets, you lose a set when you have a loose wheel because you have to come in and change them, and now that set’s junk. So, when you don’t have enough tire sets, having a loose wheel is the same as having a flat tire. So, you can easily fall behind.”
