MWR NAMES DAVID REUTIMANN DRIVER OF THE #44 UPS TOYOTA CAMRY
Reutimann to drive #44 UPS Toyota beginning at Martinsville in 2008
CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 12, 2007) -- Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) today announced that David Reutimann will replace Dale Jarrett as the driver of the #44 UPS Toyota Camry beginning with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway on March 30, 2008. Reutimann's appointment as the new driver of the #44 UPS Toyota Camry comes on the heels of Jarrett's announced plans to retire from full-time competition after the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series season.
The 37-year old Zephyrhills, Fla.-native is currently competing in his first full season of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series competition. Reutimann's big career break came in 2004 when he was hired by Darrell Waltrip to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Reutimann scored his first win in the Truck Series one year later at Nashville Superspeedway and finished third in the championship standings last season.
"We obviously think very highly of David Reutimann," said Michael Waltrip, owner of Michael Waltrip Racing. "It's been impressive watching him since he started racing in the Truck Series in 2004. If you look at his performance each year since, he has made great strides with his skills behind the wheel much as he has during the course of the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series season. We believe there are great things to come for David Reutimann and look forward to watching him grow as a driver and sponsor representative."
For UPS, Reutimann will be only the second driver to represent the UPS brand since the company joined the sport in 2000 as the Official Delivery Company of NASCAR and later in 2001 became Jarrett's primary sponsor.
"We've been fortunate to get acquainted with David during the last year as he has performed well in the extremely intense competition that's existed in the 2007 NASCAR season," said Ron Rogowski, director of sponsorship for UPS, which will be Reutimann's primary sponsor on the #44 Toyota Camry. "Performance is an important element to our racing program but even more important are the programs we activate away from the track. We believe David is someone who can help us accomplish our goals both on and off the track. We look forward to David's participation in those activities and are excited about our new relationship."
The opportunity to represent one of the most recognized brands in America is certainly appealing to Reutimann.
"When I started my racing career, I always dreamed of having the opportunity to drive for a top-notch race team and to have that big name sponsor on the hood of my race car," Reutimann said. "To have UPS on my race car is even bigger than I could have imagined. UPS is obviously an incredible company with an international presence and I'm really looking forward to this relationship."
While Reutimann is not scheduled to start driving the #44 UPS Toyota until the sixth race of the 2008 NASCAR season, he will compete in the #00 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota Camry during the first five events of the season.
