Morgan-McClure Motorsports is preparing for its annual Racing4Literacy charity golf tournament to be held at Glen Rochie Golf Club in Abingdon, Va. on Thursday, August 23. Racing4literacy is a nonprofit organization headed by Ginny McClure, wife of team owner, Larry. Racing4Literacy is an educational program designed to enhance reading and writing skills. During the 2000-2001 school year, 34 schools (115 classrooms) in Southwest Virginia and Tennessee participated. 2,118 students enrolled in the program, 5, 124 book reports were read by Morgan-McClure Motorsports staff. 1, 524 students successfully completed the challenge. It is in the works to expand the program to other states if proper funding were made available through donations.
Six new race cars have been ordered by Larry McClure. They will be a basic design. McClure states the cars will not be reengineered, in an attempt to return to a basic car. The cars will be ready for delivery to the Abingdon, Va.-based shop within the next few weeks.
Robert Larkins returned to the road crew last week in a familiar position of jackman. Robert had left the road crew at the beginning of the year to focus on shop duties.
Long time Morgan-McClure employee, Lonnie Hill missed the Kmart 400 weekend with an injured foot. Hill is a mechanic and catch can man during race weekends.
