KASEY KAHNE (No. 9 Budweiser Dodge Charger)
IS THERE A LITTLE DIFFERENT FEEL WHEN YOU COME AND RACE HERE BECAUSE OF HOW CLOSE DETROIT IS TO THE RACE TRACK? "I've been thinking about it all week on what it would do for Dodge and our company. I feel like this is one of the races...Michigan and Detroit...you always want to perform for your manufacturer, but this year it seems like (a win) would really benefit (the manufacturer) and excite some people that are a huge part of Dodge."
DO YOU THINK THAT IT WOULD BE AN EMOTIONAL LIFT FOR DODGE? "It definitely wouldn't hurt. To be able to talk about a Dodge Charger winning a race at Michigan with the things that have gone on recently (with Dodge) would be great."
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT DOUBLE-FILE RE-STARTS? "The hard part about double-file re-starts is that everyone is packed together going the same speed...everyone is real close and that allows the front couple of cars to get away a little quicker than when you have some lapped cars up there. To me, the front cars may get away, but when you're back in the pack, starting eighth double-file with all the cars that you're racing is way better than being with the lapped-down cars. Restarts (double-file) helped me once at Pocono a lot...and that was the final restart and that was great...and the other three I probably lost three or four spots each start. It's going to be up and down. It's going to be like that all year."
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT KYLE BUSCH'S GUITAR SMASHING LAST WEEKEND AFTER WINNING AT NASHVILLE? "I wasn't surprised. It's Kyle; he does whatever he comes up with at that time. I felt like he ruined a real nice guitar (laughs). Kyle does what he wants and it seems to be working for him."
IS THERE AN ART TO A GOOD RE-START? "Your gear ratios can change some and help or hurt. There's a lot to it and there are definitely guys who are better at it than others."
DOES THAT CHANGE TRACK TO TRACK? "It changes every track that you go to. All the surfaces change and if you're on hot tires or brand new tires, right-sides, left-sides, it all changes. If you hit a re-start perfect, you know when you do it. If you don't, the guy behind you does because he gets into you, beside you, and may beat you into the first corner."
DO YOU THINK THAT NASCAR SHOULD CLAMP DOWN ON BUMP-DRAFTING IN PRACTICE? "You have to let guys go. You can't get too crazy out there, but you have to let them go. That's the kind of racing it is and if you take away too many things at bump-drafting tracks, it's not going to be near the fun, excitement and show that we put on for the fans. We need people to watch, so it's OK to get a little wild out there once in a while."
