FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES Big Kmart 400 Qualifying June 11, 1999 Michigan Speedway

12 JEREMY MAYFIELD - Mobil 1 Taurus - "We're happy with it. The Mobil 1
Ford ran good again right off the truck today. It's not gonna be good
enough to be on the pole, but we're happy with it. It'll be good enough to
get us in the top 10 somewhere. We've got a great race car and we'll be
ready to go on Sunday." WERE YOU PLEASED WITH THAT LAP? "Yeah, it handled
great and it felt good. It was probably the best lap we had all day."

99 JEFF BURTON - Exide Batteries Taurus - "Going early has definitely hurt us some. The car drove a little bit differently than it had before, but we feel good about it. That should get us in first round and should get us a decent starting spot. It won't be great, but the track is slicker and the more they run the better the track will get because it will get that rubber laid down. We've had some terrible draws this year. When we're running well we draw terribly and when we're running poorly we draw great.

10 RICKY RUDD - Tide Taurus - "The track sat a little bit and in looking at the other guys it looks like they slowed down about two-tenths also, so I don't know if the track is gonna speed back up or not. But we made a choice to go on a scuffed tire than a sticker tire and, at the time we made the decision it was the right decision, but waiting a little while now I think stickers are the way to go."

11 BRETT BODINE - Paychex Taurus - "The car is just handling great, but we just can't get any speed out of this race car. If we can get it in the race, I think we'll have a good race car on Sunday but we're concerned about making the show." IT'S HORSEPOWER THEN? "It just seems like we're not making good lap times even though I've got the pedal down early in the corners. We're gonna look at it and see what we can do."

94 BILL ELLIOTT - McDonald's Taurus - "That was a good lap. I'm tickled to death at what these guys have done. If we just keep chipping away at it, I mean we get closer and closer every week and that's what we've gotta do. These guys have really worked hard and overcome a lot, and I think we've come farther than any team in this garage as far as what we've overcome to right now. I feel good about what we're doing. We need to be just a little bit better, but we're gonna work hard to get there." HOW BIG WAS THAT LAP? "Pretty big, but it must not have been big enough. We've come a long way. This crew has really pulled together and they've worked hard. We've accomplished a lot over the last few weeks." HOW WAS YOUR LAP? "It was good, it was pretty uneventful. The car felt like it rolled the corner good, it wasn't really loose and wasn't really tight. It just worked good. We could have maybe been a little bit freer, but I'll take what I can get."

6 MARK MARTIN - Valvoline/Cummins Taurus - "It was a real good run and that's what counts. It's better than we ran in practice and we got all we could get." HOW BIG IS IT TO START UP FRONT? "It's just convenient. It's a little bit of an inconvenience to start dead last, but you can still win. It's a great race track and qualifying is a competition and we all try to win it."

88 DALE JARRETT - Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus - "That was a good lap for us. We've come a long way. We struggled much of the day, but we finally got it better towards the end of practice and that's the best that we've been. I lost a little bit up in three and four. It could have been a little bit better lap, but I just couldn't make it stick there as good as I wanted to. The car was just perfect in one and two, I couldn't ask for anything better, and I thought it was gonna be really good in three and four, but it just pushed up there and that cost us a little bit of time." HAS THE HEAT AFFECTED ANYTHING? "The driver is alright with only one lap around here, but it's just made the track a little slick and greasy, but that's Michigan and that's what you expect. It should be a great show on Sunday." YOU LIKE MICHIGAN? "It's a fun track. I think everybody enjoys racing here, but we've had some success and anytime you have some success you like to come to that kind of place."

28 KENNY IRWIN - Texaco Havoline Taurus - "Our car was good. It was the same thing we ran in practice, so I guess you can't complain too much. I thought it might have a .50 in it, but I don't have any complaints on what it did. The motor ran good. The driver was off two-tenths."

66 DARRELL WALTRIP - Big Kmart/Route 66 Taurus - "Last week when I went to qualify the motor goes dead on me. Today I go to qualify and the motor goes dead on me. It won't pull. I don't know if we get it too lean or what it is, but something is killing the motor when I get ready to go qualify. It's not the motor's fault, we've run some fast laps, but it's something in the tune up and we're missing it. Man, it just killed us today. This is a super-fast car. It should have been a .50 or .60, down in that range, that's what I was expecting. I'm real disappointed. It's better than last week, but we've still got some work to do."

77 ROBERT PRESSLEY - Jasper Engines Taurus - "That's not bad. We wanted to be a little bit better, but I think that will get us in today and be ready for race set up. I hope this Jasper Ford will start racing like we did at the beginning of the year. We got off track there a little bit and had some changes, but I think it's gonna come back around."

75 TED MUSGRAVE - Remington Arms Taurus - "It's been tough for me all day. I think I found out what's wrong with me. We weren't running too good. We changed a lot of things in this car and I think all we needed to change was the driver in the seat a little bit. I was trying to drive the car too hard. When we first went out we got too hot and we got behind the eight ball. I was just overdriving the car a lot. We kept changing it and I couldn't get it better because I was driving into the corners too hard. I told Jon (Wolfe, crew chief) that maybe it was just me and, sure enough, I let up a little early in the corner, got down on the bottom and it tightened the car up and made it push off of four. Sometimes you can change everything in a race car and it doesn't help. Sometimes you've gotta change the driver."

97 CHAD LITTLE - John Deere Taurus - "That's not as good as we should be, but we did back up our quickest practice lap. The car didn't feel that bad, so that's probably a plus. There's just not a lot of speed in there. There's definitely room for improvement. We're real proud of the John Deere team and we'll just have to keep working at it and try to find a better qualifying setup. Now the important thing is to get ready for the race."

58 LOY ALLEN, JR. - Turbine Solutions Taurus - "We picked up. The guys worked really hard all morning and we picked up everytime we got on the race track, so we're happy with that. You always want to be fast. You want to make sure you're in the race and qualify the first day. We're disappointed we didn't get to do that, but we are improving. I'm happy Turbine Solutions gave me the chance to get in the car. They've got some good equipment and some good guys with them. Hopefully, we can keep progressing and go at this thing tomorrow. If we can pick up that much again, we should be in there."

16 KEVIN LEPAGE - TV Guide Taurus - "I can't say enough for the TV Guide guys. We struggled in practice. We broke a transmission just before we got ready to do our practice qualifying run and really didn't get a good chance at it. The guys put a new transmission in. Skip (Eyler, crew chief) talked about some changes. Hopefully, it will be good enough for the top 25, but it's a whole lot better than what we practiced. Now we'll just get ready for Sunday."

2 RUSTY WALLACE - Miller Lite Taurus - "We should have run a lot quicker than that. We ran a .59 this morning and ran a .74 just then. I made an air-pressure adjustment to the right-front corner and it made the car a little loose going at the corner and then once I got to the center of the corner I lost the front-end coming off. I had to get out of the throttle coming off of two and that really kills you. That wall was coming at me pretty quick and it was either drive through the wall or crack the throtte, so I had to do something."

26 JOHNNY BENSON - Cheerios Taurus - "We expected to be a little bit better than that, but we struggled this afternoon. We wanted to pick up more, but we were pretty slow this afternoon after being good this morning. We'll just have to see where that ends up."
