Gilliland Finishes 32nd at Michigan
Brooklyn, Mich., (June 14, 2009) - David Gilliland finished the No. 71 TRG Motorsports Chevrolet Impala SS in 32nd place in today's running of the LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS).
Gilliland, from Riverside, California, was chasing both the track and the car all afternoon as temperatures were 15-degrees higher than the team has witnessed all weekend.
"We were chasing the car most of the day," Gilliland said. "We were trying some rear sway bar stuff. We were chasing our tail a little all weekend with the setup. At the end we just really eliminated the rear bar and that changed the whole driving characteristic of the car. It is not the finish that we were looking for today, but we have some good notes that we are taking out of here. We learned something today that we can apply to the rest of the season and make our team better."
A changing track had the drivers and teams manipulating the setup with every stop.
"The track was definitely slick, but it was like that for everybody. We really fought grip all day. I couldn't get the throttle down. You can't pass people if you can't get to the gas. We learned a lot and we will go back and continue to work and this program better."
TRG Motorsports team principal, Kevin Buckler, knows the more race laps the team turns the better the future looks.
"The team really worked hard all weekend," Buckler said. "I am not sure we really had the car tied into the track. The weather changed every day and during the race it was a lot hotter than it had been all weekend. This track changes a lot with the weather. I like the tenacity of the team, keeping after it all day. David was communicating with Slugger (Labbe, crew chief) all day and at the end we hit on a good setup. Maybe a little too late, but we can take this to the next oval and be that much better. Next weekend will be a big race for this team! It is my home track and I live just down the road. David finished second there last year so we are going with both barrels loaded! We are still full throttle on finding that special sponsor/partner that can help propel this team forward. If anyone out there wants to be involved with us for the upcoming race at Infineon they will be smothered in publicity sharing in our home town team angle. It reminds me a lot of when we launched our professional sports car team there in 1995."
The team will travel cross country to Infineon Raceway, in Sonoma, California, their home race track, for the June 21st running of the Toyota SaveMart 350.
