Speed, Melling to run limited schedule
ATLANTA (May 28, 1997) After fielding a competitive NASCAR Winston Cup Series team for 10 races without sponsorship funding, Melling Racing Enterprises and driver Lake Speed will now focus on securing full sponsorship and drive a limited schedule for the remainder of the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. The team has withdrawn their entry into Sunday's Miller 500 at Dover Downs International Speedway. "We have qualified for every race, and shown the sponsorship community that we are a solid top-25 team with limited funding," said Mark Melling, Vice President of Melling Racing Enterprises. "Running a quality race team is our goal for every race. We have gone to a limited schedule to ensure that there will never be a compromise to that conviction." Melling currently plans to compete in seven more NASCAR Winston Cup Series events prior to the end of the 1997 season. These events include the June 15 and August 17 events at Michigan Speedway, the June 22 event at California Speedway and the August 2 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The No. 9 Ford Thunderbird currently stands in 27th position in the owners' point standings with a best finish of 11th place at the Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Over the course of the 10 events in which Speed competed, the team had a starting average of 22nd position and a finishing average of 23rd place. "While I am very disappointed we have not been able to secure a sponsor this season," Speed said. "I am still confident that our team has shown potential sponsors what they need to see." Before the season started, the Melling team had planned on a unique sponsorship deal with a company representing the University of Nebraska. The group did not deliver the sponsorship as promised, thus leaving Melling the unenviable task of landing a sponsor during the season.
