HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 19, 1998) Kevin Lepage, driver of Roush Racing's No. 16 PRIMESTAR Ford on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, woke up Monday feeling a lot better than he did Sunday morning. He is hoping that trend continues as the circuit heads to Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday's Dura Lube/Kmart 500. Lepage fractured his right scapula in a multi-car accident Saturday night in the Pepsi 400 under the lights at Daytona International Speedway. Lepage said he thinks he will be ready to race in this weekend's race, but NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division driver Matt Kenseth, who has a "driver development" contract with Roush Racing, will travel to Phoenix with the PRIMESTAR team to provide relief if necessary. Kenseth, who is second in the NASCAR Busch Series point standings, finished second to point leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. in last weekend's CarQuest 250 at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill. He made his NASCAR Winston Cup Series debut five weeks ago, placing sixth as a substitute driver for Bill Elliott in the McDonald's Ford. He will practice Lepage's car Friday, whereupon a decision will made about who will start the car. "I'm pretty optimistic about the weekend," said Lepage, a NASCAR Winston Cup Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate. "Rotating the arm and moving it to the side and back are no big deal. It's forward and up that are the hardest. But I felt a lot better at 6 this morning than I did at 6 yesterday. So we will see." Lepage placed 40th in the inaugural night race at Daytona and earned the dubious distinction of being the first to wreck under the lights.
