Wood Brothers Racing and the Little Debbie Ford Fusion Qualify In The Top 20
Martinsville, NC (March 28, 2008)- It was a good start to the weekend as Bill Elliott qualified the #21 Little Debbie/Motorcraft Ford Fusion 17th for the Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway this Sunday with a lap time of 19.943 seconds.
During the first and only practice of the day the team had a sense of confidence as the practice times showed competitive although they did not attempt a qualifying lap as the rest of the field did.
After a few final adjustments before qualifying, Bill Elliott felt the team was on the right track. Elliott said, "I'm ecstatic to be competitive. We need to continue to nibble away at it. At least we're starting in a position where I feel like the car will race well and now we've just got to get in the race and go."
Interim Crew Chief, Mike Smith, has been with Wood Brothers Racing for nearly 20 years. Smith said the qualifying effort gave the team the boost that was needed and was what all of their hard work has led up to. He added that the improvements were the result of many things that Wood Brothers Racing had learned over the past weeks, including support from Ford Racing's stepped up engineering program.
Smith stated, "I'm really tickled for all of the guys who work on the car at the track and at the shop. All of their hard work is paying off. It's difficult to work on something when you're not seeing results, but every week we saw a little more. This is pretty nice, and since it's our home track, I really look forward to a great race on Sunday."
