Rain postpones Goody's 500 until Monday By Shawn A. Akers
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (April 19, 1998) Steady rain in the Martinsville area has postponed the running of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Goody's Headache Powder 500 at Martinsville Speedway until Monday morning.
The decision to call the race and all the activities surrounding it was announced by NASCAR officials at approximately 12:30 p.m. EDT Sunday. Originally scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, the race is now slated to begin at 11 a.m. EDT Monday.
"We looked at every window of opportunity, and there just wasn't a big enough window to get the race in," NASCAR Winston Cup Media Relations Coordinator Jeff Motley said. "When we called it, we saw that there wasn't going to be a break in the weather, so we decided to move the race to Monday."
It's the second straight race at Martinsville that has been moved back a day due to rain. Last fall's Hanes 500 was postponed until the following Monday. That race was eventually won by South Boston, Va., native Jeff Burton.
Bobby Hamilton, driver of the No. 4 Kodak Chevrolet, will start Monday's 500-lap event from the point after winning the Bud Pole on Friday with a lap of 93.175. Joining him on the front row will be Rusty Wallace in the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford, followed by Jeff Gordon, Ricky Rudd, David Green, Ken Schrader, Bill Elliott, John Andretti, Joe Nemechek and Bobby Labonte.
Wallace leads Penske-Kranefuss teammate Jeremy Mayfield in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series point standings by 24 points after the first seven races of the season. Mayfield will start Monday's race from the 13th position.
The NASCAR Winston Cup Series garage will open at 7 a.m. Monday and cars will go back through inspection prior to the race. Driver intros are set for 10:30 a.m. EDT.
