Martinsville Speedway test session for Goody's Body Pain 500 on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
Testing today (Wednesday, March 22) were Rusty Wallace, Miller Lite Ford; Jeremy Mayfield, Mobil 1 Ford; Elliott Sadler, CITGO Ford
Testing tomorrow will be Elliott Sadler (Notes as of 1p.m. today)
Are you running any faster than you were yesterday? (19.93 seconds) "No, we aren't running any faster. We have tried four or five different setups, but haven't gotten any quicker than that .93 so far. It's pretty wild, because it's really hard to get the car running fast in just a couple of laps here because it's hard to get the heat in the tires. But it's typical Martinsville. It's the same thing everybody struggles with all the time. We are working our way through it now. "
Rusty spent the morning working on qualifying again while teammate Jeremy Mayfield was working on race setup)
Have you been doing any longer runs?
"Jeremy is here doing a lot of that right now. He is getting some of that worked out, and I'm doing the qualifying stuff. To me it's real important to get qualified up front because track position here is real tough."
Have you been working on qualifying or race setup?
Actually, we are not doing either. We are just trying to get general baseline stuff out of the way that we wanted to test. We are going to get into qualifying tomorrow morning and race stuff tomorrow afternoon. We will get a handle on the car and get our general direction right now." Is this a car you have run here before?
"I've never run this car before here. It only has two races on it and run very good both times. It's a pretty good race car. We didn't know if we wanted to bring it here because it's got such a good body on it. Being as it's so close to home we wanted to try to do the best we can."
It's pretty important for you and the team to run good here isn't it? (Wood Brothers live 30 miles from the track and Elliott is from Emporia, Va.)
"Yeah, we didn't run quite like we wanted to here last year in either race. We didn't qualify good at all. We were pretty decent in the second race and had battery problems. We really want to qualify in the top 20 and go from there. That is why we decided to come here and test again. We are trying to get our team just a little bit better because it is right here close to the Wood Brothers home. I have a little history here myself so we want to try to get it better and better every time we come here."
Do a lot of your family and friends come to this race?
"Yeah, a lot of family and friends come to this race and that's why I want to do good. I want to give those guys something to cheer about when they come up here. It's not fun to run around in the back and have the city of Emporia here. We want to work on that and things do look promising. It's the best feeling car I've had here compared to the ones here in the past. We are definitely going in the right direction."
After a day and a half testing do you think you have the race setup you want?
"I am real happy with the race setup. That's what we have been working on. Rusty is doing the qualifying stuff. My race setup is running faster than I have ever qualified here. That's one of the things that's hard to do here is qualify. We probably should have been working on that. The race is so important anymore that we are spending all of our test on the race setup. So far, I am real happy with it."
Have you done this in the past, tested together and one works on race setup while the other does qualifying?
"We do that every time we get to test together. We tested together a lot in 1998. In 1999, they would test at one track and we would test at another. That was not to bad. Usually when we both come to the track together we get twice the information and that helps us more than anything."
