Raybestos® Rookie contender post-race quotes for the Virginia 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway, April 14, 2002.
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET, FINISHED 35TH. Johnson was the Raybestos® Rookie of the race for the fourth time this season and for the third consecutive race. He completed 446 laps before parking his car.
"We were trying to be patient out there and take care of our stuff and ended up having a rear-end gear break. When that happened it put us a lot of laps down and then from there on we were out there trying to finish. We were a little tight but the biggest thing that hurt us was breaking the gear. We lost a ton of laps there and from then on we were just trying to stay out of everybody's way."
HOW HARD IS IT TO RACE HERE AT MARTINSVILLE?
"It's hard. The racetrack is really flat and it's real slick as the race goes on and it's rough. It's a place that in the future the experience that I gained here will definitely help me. It's a tough racetrack."
RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 12 ALLTEL FORD, FINISHED 41ST. Newman left the race after completing 257 laps due to engine failure. He was the highest qualifying Raybestos® Rookie at Martinsville, taking the 10th starting position.
"We had a hole in the radiator and lost the water and got the oil real hot. It's Martinsville racing, I guess. We had a really good race car but when you can't finish it doesn't do you any good. We had a lot of confidence knowing that we could run well but you've got to be able to finish."
YOU HAD A VERY CAR FOR YOUR FIRST TIME EVER AT MARTINSVILLE.
"Yeah, we got a bunch of laps in and I gained a lot of experience but we need the finishes. We can't come away saying we learned something and didn't finish."
