MARTINSVILLE, VA. -- Todd Bodine continued a family tradition Friday afternoon by winning the pole position for Sunday's Old Dominion 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Martinsville Speedway. Bodine turned in a quick time of 20.204 seconds on the .526-mile speedway to capture the pole, his third of the season. "We've been fortunate this season. A lot of times we've unloaded and been fast right off the truck," said Bodine, after posting a speed of 93.724 miles per hour. "When that happens you just have to fine tune the car." Bodine's two older brothers, Geoffrey and Brett Bodine, have a dozen wins between them in three different divisions at Martinsville Speedway. And they have about that many pole wins between them at Martinsville. But for youngest brother Todd, Friday's pole was his first big hit at Martinsville. "I've been coming here since I was six or seven years old," said the driver of the K-Mart Blue Light Special Ford. "I've watched my brothers win races, win poles and I've even changed tires for them here. "For me, for my family, a win here at Martinsville Sunday would be just a little more special." Nailing down the second starting position was Dale Earnhardt Jr., who also has pretty strong family ties to Martinsville Speedway. His father, Dale Earnhardt, won six races at Martinsville. Earnhardt took the second spot in his Budweiser Chevrolet with a time of 20.227 seconds. Rounding out the top five in qualifying were NASCAR Winston Cup points leader Jeff Gordon, followed by Dale Jarrett and Johnny Benson. "Our goal coming in here today was to get a good qualifying position," said Gordon. "And this is a good starting position for us." The second five qualifiers were Ricky Craven, Joe Nemechek, Tony Stewart, Rusty Wallace and Dave Blaney. On Saturday action begins at Martinsville Speedway at 8:15 a.m. with a 90-minute Featherlite Modified practice. After Modified time trials at 11 a.m., there will be a 45-minute Winston Cup practice at noon. The final Winston Cup practice session is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. The Advance Auto Parts 200 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour race kicks off at 2:45 p.m. The Old Dominion 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race will take the green flag at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Plenty of good seats remain for both Saturday's Advance Auto Parts 200 and Sunday's Old Dominion 500.
