"We've got a good car, but I'm just an idiot pretty much. I just didn't drive the car hard enough. I didn't realize my first lap was that slow and a lot of times I have a bad habit here of overdriving the car and getting in the corner too hard. I was just trying to be nice and smooth with the car and I was obviously smooth going that slow."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Motorcraft Taurus (Qualified 9th)
"I guess I don't have anybody to blame but myself. I got into the corner and I didn't do anything different than I did in the practice. I guess the tires were a little bit cooler and I think I was going into three and the thing just jumped out from under me completely. I just grabbed a handful of steering wheel and turned to the right to catch it. Then I was up in the second groove and got all the gumballs stuck to my tires. I needed one more set of corners to get them cleaned off again, but we still ran seventh. It's disappointing in one respect, but not too disappointing because we've got a fast race car and we didn't have to roll out a backup. I'm disappointed I didn't get everything there was out of the car."
YOU MADE A NICE RECOVERY ON THE SECOND LAP? "I had to do something to save a little face because the first part of that wasn't very pretty. The rubber stuck to the tires after I got in the outside groove, so I didn't have a chance. But if I would have had one more set of corners, if I would have had one more set. Anyway, it would have been tough beating Ryan Newman. He ran a very fast lap. I ran a .68 in practice and I was number one and Newman went out and ran in the fifties, so I was probably trying a little bit too hard."
DALE JARRETT - No. 88 UPS Taurus (Qualified 32nd)
"I guess the best thing we can say is we picked up a little from practice, but we needed to pick up a lot. These are exactly the type tracks that we know we have our work cut out. Our program is a lot better in a lot of other places but we're still working on this and we'll work hard. Hopefully by Sunday we'll figure a little something out and get us a good run."
CARL EDWARDS - No. 99 Roush Racing Taurus (Qualified 22nd)
"I was just really, really loose. It wheel-hopped pretty bad into turn one so I couldn't drive it very hard. We didn't do very much qualifying practice in practice. We did race trim, so we just didn't get very lucky there."
OVERALL, IT MUST FEEL NICE TO HAVE TWO RACES AT THE SAME TRACK THIS WEEKEND AND NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL. "Yeah, that's great. I think we'll run pretty well, it's just very frustrating. We've got a lot better car than that. That was a really bad lap for us, but we'll go race 500 laps. If we're good enough, we should still be able to go."
KURT BUSCH - No. 97 Sharpie/IRWIN Taurus (Qualified 7th)
"It was a great first lap and on the second lap I was in the throttle coming out of two and it just didn't stick. All this extra horsepower that we brought from when we tested took away the difference of what could have helped us. But that's why the fans come to Martinsville because the speeds are so tight and the racing is so tight. It's close quarters all the time and for us to be on the lower side of the seventies, that was a good effort."
IS THIS TRACK TEMPERAMENTAL WITH THE CHANGES? "It's just one of the toughest places we go to. I never raced North Wilkesboro just up the road, but I heard that place was very tough for a short track. This is one of those places. You just have to be good when it counts."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 National Guard/Subway Taurus (Qualified 21st)
YOU HAD A GOOD SECOND LAP COMPARED TO THE FIRST. "Yeah, I just got real loose getting into the corner down there and it ran me up the hill. I don't know, the car was way better than that, but I just couldn't get the grip. I think the cars that went out earlier have a big advantage, really. I don't know. I think it's getting too cool and the tires just aren't getting any grip right now. That's what it seems like."
