FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES GOODY'S BODY PAIN 500 April 18, 1999 Martinsville Speedway
RICK MAST -98- Yarborough/Burdette Motorsports Taurus -- "I'm telling you, I have never in my life been knocked around, spun around, beat around, jumped around and wrecked so many times in 300 laps at any race track. This is the darndest thing I've ever seen. The first deal me and Jeremy got together, that was probably as much my fault as Jeremy's, but everyone after that, man, I'm just sitting there and 'boom' we get knocked around. The bad part about it is I had a real good race car, but you would never know it. I told the guys to get their tetanus shot before they work on this thing."
RICKY CRAVEN -58- Hollywood Video Taurus -- "We had an engine problem, but I'm awfully proud of this Hollywood Video team. We've cleared some tall hurdles this year, but we've got a few left. We're making progess and we'll just keep moving on."
JEFF BURTON -99- Exide Batteries Taurus -- HOW ABOUT THE BATTLE WITH JOHN? "Well, it wasn't much of a battle to be honest. He was just that much better than we were. I had no choice but to run the top. I couldn't even consider running on the bottom. Running on the bottom wasn't even an option for me, I was way too loose. I had to run the top, try to keep my momentum going and hope that he didn't have enough momentum to ever get by me, but as fast as he came I knew it was gonna be real hard to hold him back." HOW DISAPPOINTING IS IT TO LOSE ONE LIKE THAT? "It's disappointing, but John and I are real good friends, so it could be a whole lot more disappointing. We led our laps today. We did everything but win the race today, so we're proud of what we did. We need to be a little bit better if we're gonna win here. We were good, but just not good enough. The best car won and when the best car wins it's hard to complain with that." YOU LEAVE WITH THE POINTS LEAD. "We're trying hard to keep the point lead, but we're not racing like we're leading the points. We're racing like we need to win races because I believe to win the championship you have to win a bunch of races. We're trying to win our races and also stay out of wrecks and have no mechanical problems. Those are the things I'm hoping to do. We're excited to lead the points, but there is a whole lot of racing left and we're not gonna get too pumped up about it just yet. If we're still in this position going into Atlanta or something like that, then we'll get excited, but we're a ways away from that right now." WHAT ABOUT PIT ROAD? "I applaud Martinsville Speedway for taking a chance to make pit road better. I think that Winston Cup racing needs one pit road. Pit road does need to be wider, the problem is how do you make it wider? If you move the wall that's on the very inside where the guys stand behind, then the radius of the corner gets tighter and it becomes harder to pit in. If you move the outside wall out, then you're getting closer to the race track, so whenever you spin you're gonna tear your car up. I guess the only safe way to do it is to move the inside wall out. The safety of the crew members is real important and if we move that outside wall out just three feet, that's an extra three feet that we could get. That's something that maybe we need to look at, but I think having one pit road in 1999 and the 21st century is the way to go. You shouldn't start the race without having a chance to win. At some of the race tracks when you've got two pit roads, if you're on the back you don't have a chance to win and that's not fair."
DALE JARRETT -88- Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus -- "I'm pretty happy with eighth. We struggled starting at the back and pitting back there. We tried two tires the first time trying to get some track position and really got lucky. We were all but lapped whenever the caution came out and just kept adjusting the car from there and making it better. We made a really good call at one time where we came in and got tires when we were at the back of the lead pack and that helped us get some other positions, and then the guys made a great stop at the end -- the last stop and we gained some more positions. I thought we might get a top five out of it, but we got it a little too loose at the end and the tires went away on it. I just kind of hung on, but for where we started eighth isn't bad. We didn't lose a ton of points and that could have very easily happened. We dodged wrecks all day, so we'll take this top 10."
MARK MARTIN -6- Valvoline Taurus -- "That was a great run. That's the best I've ever run here, we just didn't finish as good as we have before. The Valvoline/Cummins team had a good car. That last set of tires was loose and it just used up the right-rear (tire)." PIT ROAD DIDN'T SEEM TO BE A PROBLEM TODAY, DID IT? "It worked out OK. I had a good day. I enjoyed it. It was a good run for us. Our car was good."
RUSTY WALLACE -2- Miller Lite Taurus -- "We had a good car, I just wore the right-rear tire out there at the end. I just smoked it right off and it just killed me. I just couldn't get it going at the end, I was just too loose." HOW ABOUT PIT ROAD? "Pit road was OK. I thought it was fine." DID YOU THINK YOU COULD RUN THEM DOWN AT THE END? "I thought I did. I started getting loose and I don't know why it got loose because it had been perfect all day long. I think it was just that set of tires I had and then, boy, all of a sudden the right-rear just buzzed right off it. It went right down to the cords and I didn't have nothing left in the right-rear and I just had to milk it home. Every now and then you get a set of tires that just doesn't agree with the way the chassis is working at that point and I got that just then, so I don't know why it did that but it did. It was perfect throughout the whole day, then we got that set of tires and everything went crazy." ANOTHER GOOD RUN THOUGH. "Yeah, it was a good run. I'm just lucky to get what I did. I just went and looked at the right-rear tire and it's got cords coming out of it, so that's a pretty good run for us. We got seventh, but it sure doesn't show how we ran because we led the most laps, got the halfway bonus, got all the stuff and wore the tire at the end, but the crew did a good job. We had great pit stops all day long and everything was good. We're up to sixth in the points, we're marching forward and that's good."
BRETT BODINE -11- Paychex Taurus -- "It wasn't what we wanted, but it was our best finish of the year so I shouldn't be disappointed, but I am. We just didn't have a good car. Fifty or 60 laps into a run the car just pushed and we couldn't get it to turn. We'll take it and go to Talladega. We can't complain about our best run of the year, but we're disappointed because we came here thinking we could run a little better than that, but it worked out. The car is in one piece and we made a gain in the points. That's what it's all about." HOW ABOUT PIT ROAD? "I didn't see any problems with it. I really didn't as far as the configuration, but that's one area we've gotta work on -- pit road."
DARRELL WALTRIP -66- Big Kmart/Route 66 Taurus -- "It felt great. We knew we had a pretty good car. We got in trouble early because we had too much air in the tires when we started the race and the car just wouldn't turn. It was bouncing all over the place. We dropped the air-pressure down and from there on we were a rocket. Actually, we were much better when the sun was out and when it clouded up that hurt us there at the end. I felt like we were making a pretty charge and then it clouded up and cooled off and the car got a little tight at the end. The Big Kmart guys did a great job. We had a good car. We did good in the pits. It was just a good, solid day for a team that's eight races old." SINCE QUALIFYING AT TEXAS THIS TEAM HAS OBVIOUSLY IMPROVED. "People just won't give you a chance to get things going and we don't need all that adversity. We've got enough on us without people saying things about us, so if they'll just give us a chance we'll get it there. We can't do it overnight. We're racing a first-year team against guys that have been doing this for several years now and I'm proud. Mark Tudor has come on board and he's really helped everybody, me included. The guys in the shop back home are getting the cars ready for us. We'll be there. We'll get up there before it's over with. We'll be a challenger. We'll have the fans on their feet before the year's over with." HOW ABOUT PIT ROAD, ANY PROBLEMS? "No, we had no problems whatsoever. I don't know if anybody else did, but we didn't. Everything worked smooth."
JEREMY MAYFIELD -12- Mobil 1 Taurus -- "We've had better days, but I guess that's an understatement. We got caught up in a couple of deals and that got us behind the eight ball almost from the start. Man, get me to Talladega."
CHAD LITTLE -97- John Deere Taurus -- "It was typical Martinsville, but considering where we started it was a good day. We came out of it OK, I think. I got turned once. I was on the receiving end once, but I was on the giving end a few times too, so, all in all, it was a good day. The brakes wore well and we just missed the set up a little bit. We were a little too loose and gave up some forward bite that we didn't need to give up, but otherwise it was a good day for us."
