RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Qualified 5th)
"That was a lot better than I thought we'd get. We ran a .29 in practice and I said, 'Man, if I can do that again I'll be decent,' but I didn't think I'd pull .15 out of it. The guys did a really good job preparing the car. This is a new car and I'm real proud of them."
WHAT KIND OF ADJUSTMENT DID YOU MAKE TO GO FASTER? "One thing we did was we went out and scuffed our tires for a second time. We were worried we didn't get enough scuff on 'em, so we did that a second time and I think that helped a little bit. That, and our shock selection. We just kept fine-tuning it and it helped us."
JEFF BURTON --99-- Citgo Taurus (Qualified 23rd)
"That's right at what we ran in practice. I suspect some people are gonna pick up and some people are gonna slow down. We were real fast almost all day and then when we put on our qualifying tires, we got tight and we made an adjustment that didn't do exactly what we needed it to do. I'm not totally pleased with that, but I'm not totally discouraged either. We'll have to wait and see where everybody ends up. You never know here. Sometimes people go slower and some times they go faster, it's hard to tell until the day is over."
JOE NEMECHEK --26-- Advance Auto Parts Taurus (Qualified 43rd)
"We've been struggling all day. We can't seem to find the grip we need to get through the middle part of the corner and that's what it's all about here at Martinsville. I'm just trying to help out Frank Kimmel and Travis. He's racing the ARCA race in Nashville today -- it's a whole different deal."
THIS MUST BE KIND OF STRANGE TO QUALIFY YOUR CAR FOR SOMEONE ELSE. "Not being able to race and all of the circumstances we're going through, it's messed up. I'm a racer and I want to race, but this is Frank's deal. At least he's keeping the team going right now."
RICKY CRAVEN --32-- Tide Taurus (Qualified 18th)
"It wasn't a lot of fun. I don't know, maybe it was fun but it wasn't that productive the second lap. Gosh, I just couldn't get any forward bite. I think we had a pretty good lap going, but I just lost it off of four. This is another great effort by the team. We have got a great, great Tide Ford for the race. We tested here a couple of weeks ago and I'm pretty excited about it."
MARK MARTIN --6-- Viagra Taurus (Qualified 17th)
"I was a little conservative. I didn't want to get caught spinning the tires and stuff, so I hedged that last lap just slightly. After I did it I said, 'Doggone, I could have gotten away with one.' It was a good lap. The car was pretty good and at least I didn't have to fight it."
RICKY RUDD --28-- Havoline Taurus (Qualified 13th)
"We didn't know what to expect. These guys have been working really hard on this Havoline Taurus, but we didn't really know what we had. We weren't good in practice. We could run good in the long run, but we weren't good for the short run. We just didn't get a hold of the race track. Our guys sat down -- Todd Parrott and Dale Jarrett -- we had a little conference before qualifying and those guys helped us this week. They put us onto some things that really helped us and it was just a teamwork effort. It's not the pole, but it will hopefully be in the top 10. Compared to 26th in practice or whatever it was, we're real pleased."
KURT BUSCH --97-- Rubbermaid Taurus (Qualified 20th)
"We backed up what we did in practice and that's what we did when we tested at Memphis -- another short track similar to this. We're just working on our short track program. We never knew we'd win at Bristol, so this is a lot better than what we were at this point last year -- just taking the right steps. We were probably a little tight on entry, but this is a good effort for the Rubbermaid Ford."
MATT KENSETH --17-- DEWALT Power Tools Taurus (Qualified 26th)
"Those aren't very good laps, I guess. I don't get concerned about over-driving it here because you get it pounded in your head so bad about over-driving the car. The first lap, I thought it was a good lap, but I was being real careful. I actually looked up at the scoreboard and saw how slow it was. I tried to pick it up the best I could the second lap, but that was about all I could get. I was just a little too loose."
ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Motorcraft Taurus (Qualified 39th)
"We ran one good lap in practice and we haven't really run good since. We don't really know what's going on. We're just struggling. We really want to run good here at Martinsville, but the Motorcraft Ford Taurus just isn't up to speed. Maybe we'll make it better by Sunday."
IT'S A DIFFERENT YEAR BUT IT'S THE SAME OLD STORY. "It's the same old song and dance. We cannot figure it out. I don't know what to tell you. I'll tell you the same thing I said last year, I don't know what to do to fix it here. We're in left field -- either I am or the car or both of us. We're just having a hard time."
DALE JARRETT --88-- UPS Taurus (Qualified 31st)
"We made an air-pressure adjustment and I'm sure that Todd is feeling the same way right now. I could just shoot myself for even mentioning it, but we were just trying to make our car go a little bit faster and we got it entirely too loose. We slowed down about a tenth and we were hoping to pick up a tenth, so it wasn't very good."
RYAN NEWMAN --12-- ALLTEL Taurus (Qualified 10th)
"That's not bad for the first time here, but we had a car that was second in practice and we didn't follow up with it in qualifying. I just couldn't get a real good bite on the race track. I was spinning my tires pretty hard on both laps and I guess it's just being my first time adapting to Martinsville. I guess I'll have to learn."
