MARTINSVILLE, Va., Sunday, April 10, 2005 -- Bobby Labonte experienced a valve problem late in the Advance Auto Parts 500 and finished 33rd.

NOTES:

Labonte was in the top-five throughout most of the race and led twice for 32 laps. While running third on Lap 399, smoke began trickling out of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet. He stayed on the track and fell back to eighth before pitting on Lap 435. The car never returned to the track as the valve problem was determined to be fatal.

Labonte fell from 34th to 37th in NEXTEL Cup points with at total of 416 points. He is 561 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson and 13 points behind 35th-place Bobby Hamilton Jr.

Because he is outside of the top-35 in points, Labonte must qualify on speed next week at Texas as only the top-35 in points are guaranteed spots in the race. That said, Labonte does have a past champions provisional should he fail to qualify on speed. Also, Labonte has never qualified worse than 15th at Texas, has five starts of fourth or better, and has won the last two Bud Poles at the 1.5-mile track.
