DARLINGTON, S.C. (September 2, 2001) - The No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Sterling Marlin finished 16th in the Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Marlin moved up to third overall in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship points standings.

The No. 40 Coors Light Dodge began the race in 11th position and Marlin battled in the top-10 most of the day until late in the 367-lap event.

"They started wrecking in turn one and Benson and Hamilton got together," Marlin said. "I got pushed into Hamilton. I kind of missed everybody else, and then Dale Jr. came off and I couldn't miss him. I didn't know he was there. I couldn't see because of the smoke."

"We had a top five car today," Marlin said. "We just got too tight. We were loose early. We adjusted and got too tight. We got good and then it was like the track changed again. Too bad the rain didn't come about 30 minutes sooner."

Lee McCall, crew chief of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T, thought the team would have a better finish in the Mountain Dew Southern 500.

"We got a flat tire towards the end so we came in and got four new tires," said McCall. "We thought we'd be in the cat bird seat being the first car out with new tires and about 13 laps to go but we ended up getting caught up in the wreck at the end."

Next on the schedule for the No. 40 Coors Light team is the Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond on Saturday, Sept. 8.
