LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas Motor Speedway will pay tribute to the late Dale Earnhardt with a gigantic floral display during the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 weekend March 2-4.

LVMS will configure 33,333 flowers on the berm that overlooks Turn 4 of the superspeedway. There will be 28,000 pure white pansies planted in the shape of a giant "3" to symbolize Earnhardt's number. The red trim around the number will be composed of 5,333 red petunias.

"We believe this to be a dignified way in which to honor the memory of Dale Earnhardt," said Chris Powell, executive vice president and general manager of LVMS. "We had a lot of ideas from a lot of people, and we think this is a fitting tribute."

In addition to the flowers, LVMS also will hang a banner above the flowers in memory of Earnhardt, the seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion who died during Sunday's Daytona 500.

On Tuesday night, a crowd of approximately 3,000 people gathered in the speedway's infield to pay homage to Earnhardt during a special candlelight ceremony.

"The outpouring in this community has been no different from anywhere else," Powell said. "The response from the motorsports fans in Las Vegas makes me proud to be a Las Vegan and proud to be a race fan."
