RYAN NEWMAN --12-- ALLTEL Taurus (Finished 5th)
HOW WAS YOUR DAY? "It started out really rough with Blaney spinning out in front of us. I was just trying to pick out which way to go -- either high or low -- and neither was a good choice at the time. That basically put us back in 43rd from about lap three on and we just struggled to work our way back up. We had to get track position because, once again, that's key. That was a good team effort for the ALLTEL Ford. To get a top five in the Raybestos rookie challenge is important and, overall, we had great pit stops and great team strategy. I had a tire that was vibrating pretty good. I couldn't tell which one it was so we had to put four on there at the end. I think if we could have put two on, we would have had some better track position, but, nevertheless, we still came home with a top five and that's important for us."
WAS THE SURFACE COMING UP IN THE HIGHER GROOVE? "For me it was definitely three and four. One and two didn't seem to have that issue at all. Really, it just looked like the race track was just marbleing up. It's almost kind of like Darlington or Rockingham when you can here the rocks and the pebbles coming up and hitting the inner crush panels. It feels like it's ripping the track right off and once it throws all those marble out there, the highest car is the one that goes up in the marbles. That's basically it."
"That's the disappointing part from a driver's standpoint is everytime they got a yellow, they've got to go out there with the blow dryers and make the track so we can at least race on it for 10 or 15 laps until it happens again. I guess that's just part of it. We respect a lot of what the track has done to try to make it better and I'm sure they'll learn from this situation. Maybe when we come back in September it'll be a lot better."
