Roush Racing Quotes of the Week...
Week of Sept. 13, 2004
TOPIC: Along with having three of five NEXTEL Cup teams in the "Chase for the Cup," Roush Racing's other two teams are running like contenders as well. On top of that, Roush has a Busch Series team currently sitting fourth in the championship standings and a truck team engrossed in a heated battle for the Craftsman Truck Series title. With so much at stake for some and basically something to prove for all, we asked the Roush Racing drivers their goals for the remainder of 2004. Here is what they had to say:
Mark Martin, No. 6 VIAGRA Ford Taurus:
"Well hopefully we can keep running the way that we have the last few weeks. There are six tracks left on the schedule where I think we can be really strong, so hopefully we can put together some more good runs and make a run at this championship."
Greg Biffle, No. 16 National Guard Ford Taurus & No. 60 Charter Communications Ford Taurus:
"It's unfortunate that we had some of the bad luck that we did earlier in the season because I truly believe we'd be in the Chase based on how we've been running lately. Actually, the National Guard team has run extremely well all year, it just seems like it's all started to come together the last couple of months or so. I'm excited about the remainder of the year because I think we're capable of getting another win or two. Our goals are to finish as high as we can in the points and get ourselves in position to contend for a championship next season.
"On the Busch side, I also feel like if we hadn't had some of the bad luck we'd be right there in the hunt. We're currently fourth, and that's very respectable, but we're really too far back to make a run at the title. You never know though, and we're going to give it all we have until the end of the year and we'll see what happens. We've had a lot of success in the Charter car and I expect to get a few more wins before it's over."
Matt Kenseth, No. 17 DEWALT Ford Taurus:
"Our ultimate goal is to go out and defend our championship from last year, but that's the same goal of the nine other teams out there in the Chase right now. We have to break it down to a week-by-week goal and that's to go out and get the best finishes we possibly can over the next 10 weeks. It's no mistakes racing time."
Kurt Busch, No. 97 SHARPIE/IRWIN Ford Taurus:
"Now that we are locked into the 'Chase', our one goal is to go out there and take the Sharpie / IRWIN Ford to Victory Lane. In 2002 we were able to win a handful of races at the end of the season, so we'd love to be able to go out and repeat that with the new point system in place."
Carl Edwards, No. 99 ROUSH RACING Ford Taurus & No. 99 SUPERCHIPS Ford F-150:
"My main goal is to win the Craftsman Truck Series championship. We started out the season determined to win the championship and that hasn't changed. We're within 76 points of the lead and we've got some really good tracks ahead of us.
"In the Cup car my goal is to complete as many laps as possible. Experience and time on the track are the most important things right now, and good finishes are an added bonus."
Jon Wood, No. 50 ROUSH RACING Ford F-150:
"Our goal for the remainder of the season is to get back in the top 10 in points and put ourselves in a position to win races. We've really struggled this summer. We've made a lot of changes from a new crew chief to new set-ups. There are a few things we're still trying to fix, but I feel like we're making progress every week."
